School Attendance
We wish to remind parents and learners that regular school attendance is crucial. Consistent attendance ensures that learners don’t miss out on valuable lessons and preparation for their upcoming formal assessments. Please assist us by ensuring your child attends school regularly and punctually.
Preparation For Formal Assessments
The Grade 4 - 6 formal assessment period for the fourth quarter will take place from 6 November to 14 November 2025.
Teachers have carefully planned the next few weeks to include regular revision in class, focusing on key concepts and skills.
To further assist your child in preparation for assessments at home, teachers have shared a suggested revision timetable, consolidation activities and sample assessment-style questions and memorandums.
Please see the formal assessment schedule for each grade below.
Co-curricular Activities and Sport in the week of 10 - 14 November:
In order to give learners an opportunity to rest and revise in the afternoons, sport and co-curricular activities will be integrated into the school day during the week of 10 - 14 November where possible.
Tennis will continue before school as normal according to the Q4 sports timetable.
Morning co-curriculars (Marimba, Choir and Orchestra) will continue as scheduled.
Drama Society, Design Society and Junior Chefs will be integrated into the school day.
Dance teachers will communicate lesson times for dance classes.
Competition Robotics times will be confirmed by Robotics coaches.
Individual music lessons will be integrated into the school day where possible.
Afternoon sport will be integrated into the school day according to the timetable below. Note that paid co-curricular activities will take priority during the 13:30-14:30 timeslot.
Absenteeism During Exams and Formal Assessments
Kindly note that the only valid reasons endorsed by the Education Department are as follows:
Learners may only miss an assessment (examination) supported by documentary evidence, for the following reasons:
1. Illness (a valid medical doctor’s certificate required)
2. Family bereavement (letter required)
3.Representing the country or province in a sporting or cultural event (official letter required)
Should a learner miss a formal assessment due to illness, please share the doctor's certificate with the class teacher. The learner will write the assessment when he/she returns to school, as arranged with the teacher.
Should a learner need to miss a formal assessment for any other reason, please send an email to the Head of Academics, Miss Drawbridge requesting permission.
Weightings on Reports
The percentages that appear on the Grade 4 – 6 reports under the Summer, Autumn and Winter columns are derived from the assessments conducted in the first three quarters of the year and the average percentage is calculated each quarter. Therefore, the percentage displayed for each subject under the Winter column is an average of the percentages from Quarter 1, 2 and 3 and carries a weighting of 80% of the final progression mark.
The percentage that appears under the Spring column for each subject is derived from the assessments conducted in Quarter 4 only and carries a weighting of 20% of the final progression mark.
The final progression mark, which determines if a learner proceeds to the next grade, appears under the Final column on the report. For a learner to progress to the next grade they must obtain a minimum of 50% for English and a minimum of 40% for all other subjects.
Here is a reminder of a few tips to support your child at home in preparation for the formal assessments:
Set up a quiet, organised study space – ensure your child has a calm, well-lit area free from distractions such as television or phones to revise or complete work.
Set a routine – encourage your child to revise each day in short, focused sessions (about 30 minutes) with short breaks in between.
Review work regularly – go over previously learnt notes and key concepts a little each day.
Stay positive and motivated – praise efforts and remind them that every bit of revision helps build confidence.
Class Placements 2026 (from our Parent Learner Directory)
We remind parents that it is impossible for the school to accommodate all class requests, approximately 50 different requests in each grade, and it would be unfair to allow some parents to make requests and not others.
An example of these requests would be:
Bonke's mom has asked for him to be with his best friend Mark, however, Mark's mom has asked that they are not placed together. Mark's mom would like him with Riaz and Kishen, however, Kishen's mom would like him to be with Bonke and not Mark. Riaz wrote on his friendship slip that he would like to be with Bonke, however, Riaz's mother does not want him with Bonke or Mark.
Should a parent make a request for placement as shown in the above example, we may need to share the request with another parent in order to avoid parent conflict with the teacher.
With this in mind, we ask that you trust the teachers’ ability to place your child in the most suitable class. Class placements are a mammoth task and many hours are spent deliberating over the most suitable combinations for the learners.
We trust that you will support our decision, as it is based on our professional evaluation of each learner within their learning environment. We promise to do our very best to ensure each child is placed in a class in which they will thrive.
The following slides have been developed collaboratively using AI and our ICT Acceptable User and AI policies.
Please use these slides each week as conversation starters with your child on responsible digital citizenship.
Preparing, Exploring and Growing Together 🌟
English & Mathematics ✏️
Systemic Test preparation was in full swing this week as our Grade 6 learners revised important skills across English and Maths. In English, they focused on reading comprehension, grammar and writing strategies. Learning how to unpack questions carefully and express their ideas with confidence. In Mathematics, they revisited key concepts in calculation and problem-solving, sharpening their reasoning and accuracy.
The goal this week wasn’t just to prepare for tests, it was to build confidence, strengthen understanding and develop strategies that help them approach any challenge with calm and focus.
As we reminded them, “Preparation is the key to success!” 🔑
Geography 🌍
In Geography, we continued exploring the fascinating topic of Population: Why do people live where they do? Learners discovered how factors such as climate, job opportunities and access to resources influence where people choose to live. From bustling cities to peaceful rural areas, they learned how geography shapes daily life and how people adapt to their environments. 🗺️
Through lively discussions and visual maps, the Grade 6s gained a deeper appreciation for how the world’s population is distributed and how interconnected our global communities truly are. 🌏
We are incredibly proud of how our Grade 6 learners have approached this busy week with such focus, curiosity and enthusiasm. Their hard work and positive attitudes are setting the stage for a strong and successful term ahead. 🌟
Technology
This week, our Grade 6 learners travelled through time as they explored the exciting concept of Retrofuturism - imagining the future as people in the past once did!
After learning how retrofuturistic art combines vintage style with futuristic ideas, learners used their Technology skills to design their own retrofuturistic creations. Using tools like Canva and Tinkercad, they imagined flying cars, space cities, and futuristic fashion inspired by the 1960s–80s.
Through this project, learners practised digital design and creative thinking, discovering how imagination and technology work hand in hand. The classroom buzzed with excitement as they shared their unique artworks.
Gr 6 Orientation Morning at the Secondary Faculty
Our Grade 6 learners and their parents who are joining the Secondary Faculty in 2026 are invited to an Orientation Morning on Saturday 15 November 2025 from 09:00 - 11:00.
Can you believe we are already two weeks into the quarter? Here is a quick look at what we've been up to in Grade 5.
A big well done to all our mathematicians who are continuing to work hard and progress through the different levels! ➕ Principal Paul has been very busy handing out his "Principal Paul's Prize" to those learners who have reached the Epic Level. We can't wait to congratulate our first LEGEND level learners soon!
In our class lessons, we are building on our strong foundation of fractions and have begun exploring the world of decimals.
Our reading journey with Martine in "The White Giraffe" continues! It's been exciting to follow her story as she discovers hidden talents she never even knew she had.
Did you know there are more books in this wonderful series? It's a great option for keen readers!
This week, our Grade 5 learners became young scientists as they explored the fascinating world beneath their feet! As part of our Natural Sciences unit on soil, we conducted a hands-on investigation to test the absorption quality of different types of soil.
The aim of the experiment was simple but exciting:
➡️ Which type of soil absorbs the most water?
Learners worked collaboratively in small groups, each testing different soil samples such as sand, clay, and loam. Using measuring cylinders, funnels, and filter paper, they carefully poured equal amounts of water onto each soil type and observed how quickly or slowly the water drained through.
Through this engaging activity, learners discovered that:
Sandy soil allows water to pass through quickly due to its large particles.
Clay soil holds water for longer because of its tiny, tightly packed particles.
Loam soil, a mixture of sand and clay, provides the best balance—making it ideal for plant growth.
Well done to our Grade 5 scientists for their enthusiasm, teamwork, and inquisitive minds!✨
More Grade 5 Maths...
Our enthusiastic Grade 5 Mathematics learners have already begun preparing for the 2026 Junior Tour de Maths! Each Tuesday and Wednesday morning, eager learners arrive bright and early - often waiting outside the classroom before 7 a.m. - ready to challenge themselves with higher-order problem-solving and Olympiad-style questions. Their excitement and commitment to learning beyond the curriculum are truly inspiring, setting a wonderful tone for the year ahead.
Please note that assessments are just around the corner. We encourage all our learners to stay on track with their studying and ensure they are well-prepared.
All necessary details and schedules can be found in the Assessment Pack 2025. Let's aim for a calm, confident, and focused assessment period!
Our Grade 4 learners have had an exciting few weeks filled with hands-on learning, creativity, and curiosity! They’ve been connecting ideas across different subjects, from Maths to Afrikaans to Geography, and showing how learning can be both fun and meaningful. 🌟
Mathematics:
In Maths, our learners explored the concepts of area and perimeter in a truly interactive way. Using wool and chopsticks, they built their own unique shapes and worked out the perimeter by measuring each side. Then, with the help of Geoboard, they investigated area by counting squares and comparing different shapes. This hands-on approach helped them understand how area and perimeter work together and made geometry come alive through creativity and teamwork! ✨📏
Geography:
Our Geography lessons have focused on one of the most important resources in South Africa - water. Learners explored where our water comes from, how it is stored, and the many ways we use it every day. They also discussed why saving water is so important and how small actions can make a big difference. From rivers and dams to household taps, our Grade 4s are becoming thoughtful, eco-conscious citizens who understand the value of every drop. 🌍🚰
It’s been an inspiring learning journey filled with discovery, creativity, and real-world connections. We’re so proud of our Grade 4 learners for their enthusiasm and hard work! 🌈👏
Afrikaans:
In Afrikaans, learners combined language and technology by designing hul eie uitnodigings (their own invitations) on their iPads. They practised vocabulary, sentence structure, and creativity while learning to express themselves digitally. It was wonderful to see how each learner’s personality shone through their designs.
Well done to these Grade 4s! Your Mathletics Skills are Epic!!
Congratulations to Elise, who was crowned Champion on 19th National A plus Students Math Competition with more than 340 students in attendance.
She was chosen as one of PAMA SA team members and will present South Africa to attend the 23rd PAMA Global Abacus and Mental Arithmetic.
Diarise our two awards events at the end of the year. Parents of children receiving awards at the Sport, Culture and Technology awards will be notified in November. Every Senior Preparatory child will receive a certificate at our Growing Minds Celebration on 3 December at 08h30. Parents are welcome to take their child home after these events.
As part of our Quarter Four outreach, we are excited to support the Santa Shoebox Project, a wonderful initiative that provides personalised gift boxes to children in need. Each class is responsible for preparing two boxes – one for a girl and one for a boy. Your child's class teacher will be in touch with details about what is needed for these boxes and how you can contribute. Completed boxes are due 5 November 2025.
If you would like to donate an additional box on your own, please reach out to Ms. Magadana at lmagadana@parklands.co.za to pledge a box and receive further details.
Thank you for your generosity!
Our Grade 6 Creative Agents have been Purposeful Collaborators this week, showing that Critical Thinking and Effective Communication are essential to ensuring that their Fashion Show Designs materialise as they’ve envisioned. Each group has shown incredible Responsibility and taken ownership of their project. The variety of materials being used to create the items is incredible, and we’re so excited to showcase this project. We don’t want to give too much away, but these images will give you a sneak peek.
Congratulations to our Senior Preparatory and Chamber Choirs on outstanding performances at the West Coast Song Festival this week. We are also extremely proud of our first-time performers who braved the stage at our Senior Soirée this week. Congratulations to our vocalists, violinists, drummers and guitarists - you’ve been set up for success!
Our Grade 5 and 6 Science Club learners recently had the incredible opportunity to take part in a virtual Q&A session with Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise.
Mr. Haise captivated everyone with his vivid storytelling and humble reflections on the historic Apollo 13 mission. He shared how teamwork, quick thinking, and perseverance turned a life-threatening situation into one of NASA’s greatest successes.
Learners were fascinated by his insights on space travel, zero gravity, and problem-solving under pressure. Learners asked their questions on camera with Fred and answered with such vivid detail and he really inspired our young scientists to reach for the stars!
FLL Challenge Team Shines at Regional Event!
Our FLL Challenge team participated in their first-ever FIRST LEGO League regional event last weekend — and what an incredible debut it was!
As a rookie team, they did exceptionally well and received fantastic feedback from the judges, especially for their Innovation Project. The learners designed and created an app to help archaeologists match pieces of artifacts found at one dig site with potential matches discovered at another. They coded the app entirely on their own, developed creative poster boards, and took part enthusiastically in the robot challenge games. It was a lively, music-filled event where our team had the opportunity to meet other teams, see inspiring innovation projects, and cheer on fellow participants. We are immensely proud of their teamwork, creativity, and dedication — a brilliant start to their FLL journey!
What a great start to Quarter 4 sport at Senior Prep! Our learners have hit the ground running this week across all our summer codes - Golf, Swimming, Tennis, Cricket, and Softball. It’s been fantastic to see everyone back out on the fields, courts, and in the pool with such enthusiasm and commitment after the break.
Our Golfers have enjoyed getting back into rhythm, focusing on technique and consistency. Tennis sessions have been full of energy with powerful rallies and great sportsmanship on display. Cricketers and Softballers are sharpening their batting, fielding, and teamwork ahead of a busy match schedule, while our Swimmers have been preparing for the upcoming gala season, working hard on endurance and stroke refinement.
A special mention - Chess is officially back in action today! ♟️We’re excited to see our strategic minds back at work and ready for some excellent competition this quarter.
Looking ahead, next week promises plenty of action with a full match week across Tennis, Cricket, and Softball.
Let’s keep the momentum going, give our best effort in practices, and continue showing the teamwork and spirit that make Parklands sport truly special! 💙

From next week, please remember to pack in your swimming costume and come dressed in your PE attire. We’ll play it by ear on the day - if the sun is out and the weather’s warm, we’ll dive right into the pool for a refreshing PE session!
If it’s a little gloomy, don’t worry - we’ll keep the learners active and engaged on land instead. Either way, it’s going to be an exciting part of our summer PE programme!
Please take note that although coaches guide and support learners during swimming in Physical Education lessons, we are not a Learn to Swim School and for their own safety it is critical that learners are water safe and able to swim. Please liaise with the coaches if you need contact details for LEARN TO SWIM schools for your child to attend.
It’s been another action-packed week of summer sport at Parklands College Senior Prep! Our learners continue to impress with their teamwork, spirit, and sportsmanship across all codes.
🥎 Softball
Our U11 and U12 teams faced strong opposition this week, showing determination throughout their games. While results didn’t go our way, the effort and enthusiasm from both teams were fantastic to see. Players of the Match are Alyssa and Imogen.
🏏 Cricket
Our U10 team remains unbeaten, securing another dominant win - this time by 98 runs! Player of the Match goes to Blake, who scored 32 runs and took a wicket - a brilliant all-round performance.
The U11s also celebrated a solid victory against CBC, showcasing excellent batting depth and tight fielding. Player of the Match goes to Taylor.
Our U12s faced a tough battle against Table View, falling short by 32 runs, but Ross shone with a strong performance, earning Player of the Match.
🎾 Tennis
Our U12 team displayed great composure and focus in their match against Parklands College Secondary, claiming a 5–1 victory. Nina was outstanding on the court and deservedly named Player of the Match.
What a week of learning, growth, and sporting excitement! Well done to all our Senior Prep athletes for giving their best and representing Parklands College with pride.

MEET JEFF KINNEY
An enthusiastic cartoonist, Jeff Kinney’s first Diary of a Wimpy Kid book was published in 2007. It was an instant bestseller, with 100 000 copies in print in the USA alone within the first year. Numbers continue to grow exponentially with each new edition, with more than 300 million copies in print worldwide. Since that very first book, the series has been a fixture on the New York Times bestseller lists, for more than 800 weeks in total. You will find these books everywhere you go in the world, with 87 editions available in 70 languages.
Jeff is a father of two teenage boys, a bookshop owner, and has travelled the world to promote his books. When he was in Cape Town a few years ago, he told us that teenagers everywhere are similar, with the same dreams and interests. We are grateful to Jeff for creating a series that engages our young readers and gets them excited about reading. No wonder he was named one of Time Magazine’s most influential people in the world! On Tuesday morning there was a palpable sense of expectation, followed by tremendous joy when the books arrived on our campus. Happy reading, everyone.
Birthday Books
We would like to thank Jordan Kruis for his Birthday Book donation, the seventh book of the exciting Bear Grylls Adventures: The Volcano Challenge by Bear Grylls.
It’s a thrilling story where Charlie learns that the biggest challenges are often found right outside your door.
Our young readers will enjoy this action-packed read with lava, danger and super cool survival tips!
We are grateful for your support of our library.
College blazers
We are delighted to inform you that the special braiding for our striped blazers has finally arrived. We are now ready to begin the process of adding this distinctive touch to every learner's blazer.
We will inform you of the date via email of when your child's blazer needs to be dropped off at school for braiding. Please ensure your child's blazer is:
The braiding process will take a few weeks, after which the blazers will be returned to our learners. Should the weather be a little chilly, your child is welcome to wear their school jersey.
This is a once opportunity as it is a once-off service for our Grade 4-6 learners with striped blazers. After this there will be an additional cost to have the blazer braided.
As of this week, all new striped blazers purchased from School and Leasure now come with the braiding
Please be reminded that all learners need to wear the new striped blazer with the braiding from the start of 2026. To ensure timely delivery, we advise you to place your order with our uniform supplier, School and Leisure, early.
