29 August 2025
Dear Parents
Please take note of the following:
Dress-up Days:
Spring Dress-up Day: Flower Power - 1 September
Learners are invited to dress up in their brightest, happiest Spring colours!
Bok Friday - 5 September
Let's support our team in green & gold!
SP Music Recital - Wednesday, 10 September 18:00
We look forward to this musical event and seeing our musicians shine on stage.
School Drop Off Time
Please ensure that learners arrive on time for the start of the academic day. Parents are welcome to drop their children off between 07:30 and 07:45 and are requested to use the Drop and Go Zone on the SP Campus in Wood Drive. Reminder that we do not have supervision for learners before 07:30 other than planned sports, dance and some tutorials arranged in advance.
In PSW, our learners explored the theme “Belonging starts with me.” 💚 They prepared and presented orals that challenged them to think about what it really means to belong, why empathy matters, and how we can all make our school a more inclusive space. Learners were guided to start with a strong opening, perhaps a powerful quote, a personal story, or a big question like “Have you ever felt like you didn’t belong?”
Their speeches touched on key questions such as:
✨ What does it mean to belong?
✨ What is the opposite of belonging?
✨ What behaviours exclude others?
✨ Why is empathy so important?
They also reflected personally, sharing moments when they or others were included or excluded and how it made them feel. Finally, learners made commitments about how they can make a difference, such as sitting with someone alone, welcoming new classmates, or speaking kindly.
Together, they even suggested school-wide ideas like a Kindness Wall, Buddy Bench, or Empathy Challenge. 🌟 It was inspiring to see them not only talk about belonging, but also actively shape ways to bring more of it into our school community.
In English, learners have been perfecting their use of the perfect tense while preparing for orals on the big question: What does it take to be a hero? With growing confidence, expression, and clarity, they are sharing thoughtful and inspiring ideas about heroism.
In Geography, we ventured into the world’s hot deserts. Learners discovered where deserts are found, explored their extreme climates, and investigated how plants and animals adapt to survive in such harsh conditions. From camels to cacti, nature’s creativity left them amazed and curious to learn more about our planet’s unique environments. 🌍✨
In Mathematics, the focus was on drawing patterns using circles. This activity helped learners strengthen their ability to use a compass, an essential skill as they prepare for high school. It is wonderful to see how mathematics and art can come together in such a fun and creative way. 🎨➕➗
In Technology, Grade 6s embarked on an exciting project, designing and building model planes that transform elastic energy into kinetic energy. Along the way, they’re applying key mathematical concepts like symmetry and angles, proving that Maths isn’t just numbers on a page - it’s the foundation of innovation! Stay tuned… our final flying creations will be revealed soon!
In Art we have been exploring the fascinating world of Cubist art by creating self-portraits using oil pastels. Inspired by the bold, geometric style of Cubism, they reimagined their own facial features through abstract shapes and vivid colours. The results were as unique as each learner, showcasing their creativity and individuality in striking ways. 🖼️✨
Our learners have been busy bringing stories to life, hunting for clues, and unleashing energy - literally!
In the Drama class, our budding actors dove into the world of Biffins Park, bringing characters to life through group performances. Our creative writers took charge, crafting brand new conclusions to the play. From plot twists to surprise characters, their imagination knew no bounds!
Extra English took an exciting turn outdoors with a scavenger hunt adventure! Our Grade 5 detectives sharpened their observation skills while practicing language in the fresh air. Nothing beats learning when it feels like play!
In Science, learners discovered the magic of elastic potential energy - stretching, releasing, and watching as stored energy transformed into kinetic energy.
Through careful observation, prediction, and recording, they uncovered the incredible relationship between energy that waits and energy that moves.
🌱 Maths Magic: Our Grade 4 learners have been getting their hands (and minds!) busy with an exciting new project all about sustainable farming methods. They were fascinated to discover how plants can grow without soil through hydroponics, sparking lots of “wow” moments in class.
To take their learning further, each learner became an entrepreneur for the day by designing a unique store logo, their creativity truly shone! We ended the week with a lighthearted “Guess the Herb” challenge, where learners tested their senses to identify mystery herbs. There were plenty of laughs, surprising guesses, and even some future chefs in the making!
🦁 Afrikaans Fun: Learners have been hard at work (and play!) completing their project all about the Big 5 and game reserves. They learned new vocabulary while diving into the world of lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards, and buffalo, and gained a deeper understanding of why game reserves are so important in South Africa. To make their learning come alive, the class took part in a board game adventure where they faced challenges and earned points to become the ultimate “Best Game Ranger”. The excitement was real, and learners loved combining knowledge with a touch of friendly competition.
We are so proud of our learners for their outstanding performances at the Cape Town Eisteddfod last Friday. Their hard work and dedication truly shone, and they can be very proud of their impressive results across piano, marimba, and choir performances.
🛩️ Science Club Takes Flight!
Our Science Club recently designed and built a paper plane launcher - and in the process, we explored the fascinating science of energy and motion. The launcher stores elastic potential energy in the stretched band, and when released, this stored energy is quickly transformed into kinetic energy, propelling the paper plane forward.
The shape and angle of the plane affect how air resistance and lift act on it, showing us how forces and aerodynamics influence flight. This fun experiment demonstrated how simple materials can help us understand real-world scientific principles!
It has been another very busy and exciting week in the Robotics Department at the College!
On Saturday, our team robotics learners attended an inspiring workshop on Shapr 3D. They discovered how this tool can be used not only for creating 3D models of everyday objects but also for designing parts for robots, making gears, and so much more.
Alongside this, our teams have been working tirelessly in preparation for the upcoming WRO National Competitions. We are thrilled to announce that all of our teams have qualified to attend Nationals – and even more exciting, Parklands College is entering with exceptionally strong national rankings after the regional events:
Robomission Elementary: 1st place and 2nd place
Robomission Junior: 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place
Robomission Senior: 1st place
Future Innovators: 5th place
RoboSports: both of our teams have qualified!
These outstanding achievements are a testament to the passion, creativity, and hard work of our learners and coaches. We are so proud of what they have accomplished and look forward to cheering them on at Nationals.
To add to the excitement, our FLL teams also received their kits this week. With the season officially launched, they are already hard at work, beginning to build their elements – and their enthusiasm is contagious!
Exciting times truly lie ahead for Robotics at Parklands College!
This quarter we are focused on giving back to our community in a meaningful way. Our goal is to create 100 care packages for the residents of Ria Abel Retirement Home. Each grade has been assigned specific items to collect, from wet wipes and tissues to soap, toothpaste and more, as shown in the image. We also hope to add mini chocolates to each care package as a small, thoughtful treat. Any donations toward this are warmly welcomed.
The final date for collections is 12 September 2025.
Thank you for your ongoing generosity and support. Together we can brighten someone’s day and remind our elderly community members that they are seen, valued and cared for.
What an awesome week of sport at Senior Prep as our learners bounced back full of energy and excitement post-Derby Day! This week we saw our Netballers, Rugby players, Soccer stars, Hockey teams, and Chess squad all in action across competitive fixtures. The pride, effort, and sportsmanship on display showed exactly what it means to be part of Parklands College Senior Prep.
