Absenteeism During Exams and Formal Assessments
Kindly note that the only valid reasons endorsed by the Education Department are as follows:
Learners may only miss an assessment (examination) supported by documentary evidence, for the following reasons:
1. Illness (a valid medical doctor’s certificate required)
2. Family bereavement (letter required)
3.Representing the country or province in a sporting or cultural event (official letter required)
Should a learner miss a formal assessment due to illness, please share the doctor's certificate with the class teacher. The learner will write the assessment when he/she returns to school, as arranged with the teacher.
Should a learner need to miss a formal assessment for any other reason, please send an email to the Head of Academics, Miss Drawbridge requesting permission.
Weightings on Reports
The percentages that appear on the Grade 4 – 6 reports under the Summer, Autumn and Winter columns are derived from the assessments conducted in the first three quarters of the year and the average percentage is calculated each quarter. Therefore, the percentage displayed for each subject under the Winter column is an average of the percentages from Quarter 1, 2 and 3 and carries a weighting of 80% of the final progression mark.
The percentage that appears under the Spring column for each subject is derived from the assessments conducted in Quarter 4 only and carries a weighting of 20% of the final progression mark.
The final progression mark, which determines if a learner proceeds to the next grade, appears under the Final column on the report. For a learner to progress to the next grade they must obtain a minimum of 50% for English and a minimum of 40% for all other subjects.
Here is a reminder of a few tips to support your child at home in preparation for the formal assessments:
Set up a quiet, organised study space – ensure your child has a calm, well-lit area free from distractions such as television or phones to revise or complete work.
Set a routine – encourage your child to revise each day in short, focused sessions (about 30 minutes) with short breaks in between.
Review work regularly – go over previously learnt notes and key concepts a little each day.
Stay positive and motivated – praise efforts and remind them that every bit of revision helps build confidence.
Assembly Message - Bystander or Upstander
In assembly this week we spoke about the difference between a bystander and an upstander
Bystanders are individuals who witness bullying and cyberbullying in action, who stand by and watch, sometimes even videotape it and make it viral, and who do and say nothing. Often bystanders don’t know what to do and sometimes are afraid that their own group of friends will exclude them for helping an outsider.
When you’re a bystander it’s important to know that by doing nothing you are sending a message to the bully that their behaviour is acceptable - It isn’t!
Upstanders:
Don't laugh
Don’t call names
Don't encourage the bully in any way
Don't participate
Don’t become an "audience" for the bully
Reach out in friendship
Help the victim in any way they can
Support the victim in private
If you notice someone being isolated from others, invite them to join you (Don’t exclude anyone)
Include the victim in some of your activities
Most importantly, Tell an adult
Taking personal responsibility
Taking action by telling the bully to stop
Taking action by getting others to stand up to the bully with them
Taking action by helping the victim.
Taking action by shifting the focus and redirecting the bully away from the victim
Taking action by telling an adult who can help
Our learners were reminded that who the adults are that can help:
Class Teacher
Enrichment Teacher
Grade Head
Teacher on Break Duty - there are always four of them!
Sports coach or manager
Parent
Associate Principal or Principal

Building Integrity and Honesty 🌟
Our Grade 6 learners explored one of the most important qualities a person can have: INTEGRITY. Our theme, “Building Your Integrity: Honesty, Trust and Character,” guided learners through real-life situations where they had to decide what was right, even when it wasn’t easy.
We began by unpacking the meaning of trust, what it feels like, how it’s built and how it can be broken. Learners quickly realised that honesty acts as the “hammer and nails” that hold relationships together.
We read the heartwarming story The Empty Pot by Demi 🌱. This tale beautifully illustrates that integrity isn’t about success or perfection but about having the courage to tell the truth, even when it’s difficult.
The highlight of the lesson was our “Consequence Circle” role-play challenge! In groups, learners acted out real-world scenarios, such as finding money, copying homework or taking shortcuts on a project. Each group presented two sides of the story, the dishonest choice and the honest choice, and then discussed the short- and long-term consequences of both. The discussions were powerful.
Our Grade 6s walked away understanding that integrity isn’t just about telling the truth. It is about living the truth every day, in every choice, no matter who’s watching. 🩵
English: The Wonderful World of Poetry
This week in English, we explored the wonderful world of poetry! We analysed two poems, looking at their figures of speech, rhyme schemes and meanings. Then we became poets ourselves, using objects found in nature 🌿like leaves, stones and feathers for inspiration. It was amazing to see how nature sparked our creativity and helped us write our own unique poems! ✍️
Technology: Mission to Mars - Grade 6 Learners Take on the Year 2050! 🚀
In this week’s Grade 6 Technology lesson, our learners embarked on an exciting journey to the year 2050, where they are part of a daring mission to Mars! Working in teams, they are tackling real-world challenges faced by astronauts and engineers - from writing an application to the Mars Mission Selection Committee, to carefully calculating the weight of their payload to stay under the 20,000kg limit. Learners have been debating their non-negotiable essentials, deciding what personal and practical items to pack and even designing a logo and constitution for their new Martian colony. The creativity, collaboration and critical thinking on display have been truly out of this world! 🌌
Next week, our young innovators will continue developing their colony as they begin to inhabit Mars - we can’t wait to see what their future on the Red Planet looks like!
PE: Making a Splash!
Our Grade 6s were absolutely thrilled to dive back into the pool this week! There were smiles, splashes and plenty of friendly competition as learners refreshed their swimming skills. The excitement was contagious! 🤩
It’s safe to say that our learners made quite a splash, both in the pool and in their positive attitudes! Their teamwork, laughter and enthusiasm reminded us that staying active is just as important as learning in the classroom. ☀️
Orientation Morning at the Secondary Faculty
Our Grade 6 learners and their parents who are joining the Secondary Faculty in 2026 are invited to an Orientation Morning on Saturday 15 November 2025 from 09:00 - 11:00.
We've had another busy and exciting week in Grade 5! Here’s a little snapshot of what we’ve been working on in class.
This week, our mathematicians were busy exploring 2D shapes. We moved beyond just identifying them and dived into calculating perimeter (the distance around a shape) and area (the space inside it). The class worked hard applying formulas and solving practical problems.
This week in English, we put our grammar skills into action! Learners focused on using all the grammar rules we've learned to write insightful diary entries. This was a fantastic way to practice reflecting on memorable days, capturing personal thoughts, feelings, and experiences all from the first-person perspective ("I..."). It was a great blend of technical skill and creative expression!
Our virtual journey across South Africa's amazing heritage sites continued, and what an inspiring trip it was!
We started in Gauteng at the Cradle of Humankind, learning about our earliest ancestors and the incredible fossil discoveries made there.
Next, we travelled north to Limpopo to discover the treasures of Mapungubwe, imagining the powerful kingdom that created the famous golden objects, like the golden rhino.
Finally, we learned about a different kind of national treasure from the Northern Cape: the incredible Frances Baard. We discussed her bravery and the amazing impact she had as an activist and leader in the fight for justice in our country.
It was a fantastic week of learning!
Our Grade 4 learners have had a wonderfully creative and lively week!
In Art, they have been working on stunning bird artworks, each one showcasing their attention to detail and love for colour.
In Afrikaans, excitement filled the classroom as we explored our new set work book, Z is vir Zackie: Die Perfekte Pizza. There were plenty of giggles as we got to know Zackie and his friends, and the highlight of the week was creating our own “pizza summaries”, a fun and imaginative way to capture the story’s characters and the new words we learnt along the way.
This week, our Grade 6 Science Club delved into the fascinating world of acids and bases! Learners conducted hands-on experiments to test everyday household substances using natural indicators like red cabbage juice. Excitement filled the room as colours changed before their eyes - revealing whether each substance was an acid, a base, or neutral. Through observation, teamwork, and discussion, our budding scientists discovered how chemistry connects to the world around them. It was a fun, engaging, and educational session filled with curiosity and colour!
Grade 5 & 6 learners make history with orbiting pixel art!
In a moment that has left the entire College buzzing with excitement, six young learners — Lily, Joshua, Harvey, Mukundi, Haydn, and Emma — have achieved something extraordinary: their computer program ran aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the European Astro Pi Mission Zero Challenge 2025.
This is no ordinary coding project. Our learners joined forces with international peers from CoderDojo: Votanikos (Greece) and CoderDojo: Olomouc (Czech Republic) to write a program that collected data from the ISS’s light sensor and turned it into colourful pixel art on an 8×8 LED display. The program met the European Space Agency (ESA) and Raspberry Pi Foundation’s strict requirements — earning ‘flight status’ — and soared into orbit above the Earth.
The program ran on May 17, 2025, while the ISS flew high above the South Pacific Ocean, between 14:51:05 and 14:52:05 UTC, at coordinates -50.8453, -104.6596.
Learners received official Certificates to commemorate this out of world achievement — signed by Hugo Marée (Head of ESA Education Office), Philip Colligan (CEO of Raspberry Pi Foundation), and ESA Project Astronaut Sławosz Uznański. Each certificate records the exact time and coordinates their code orbited Earth — a memento that captures a moment these learners will never forget.
This accomplishment highlights the extraordinary potential of our learners and the strength of Parklands College’s STEM program. Heartfelt thanks go to Coderlevelup and SAPIENT.rocks for mentorship, and to the Raspberry Pi Foundation and ESA for providing this life-changing opportunity.
Our learners have done more than code — they’ve reached for the stars and touched them. Parklands College couldn’t be prouder. Truly, the sky is no longer the limit.

Every Senior Preparatory child will receive a certificate at our Growing Minds Celebration on 3 December at 08h30. Parents are welcome to take their child home after these events.
As part of our Quarter Four outreach, we are excited to support the Santa Shoebox Project, a wonderful initiative that provides personalised gift boxes to children in need. Each class is responsible for preparing two boxes – one for a girl and one for a boy. Your child's class teacher will be in touch with details about what is needed for these boxes and how you can contribute. Completed boxes are due 5 November 2025.
If you would like to donate an additional box on your own, please reach out to Ms. Magadana at lmagadana@parklands.co.za to pledge a box and receive further details.
Thank you for your generosity!
The Grade Sixes learned different skills this week in their Fashion Show preparation: Sewing, papier-mâché, rolling, spray-painting, hot-glueing and box cutting were among the favourites.
Our ladies have done it - South Africa is in the World Cup Finals! 🇿🇦 A special mention to Laura Wolvaardt (Past Head Girl), who delivered an incredible 169 in the semi-finals, turning the tables on England after their earlier win against us at the start of the tournament.
Don’t miss our superwomen in action this Sunday, 2 November at 11h30 - let’s rally behind them and show our support! 💚💛
It’s Summer Matches Mania across the Senior Prep! Our Cricketers, Softballers, and Tennis players have been in fantastic form - with our Tennis teams maintaining their perfect start to the season with two wins from two! The Golf and Chess programmes continue to thrive, and we’re thrilled to be back in the pool as swimmers dive into preparation for the upcoming gala.
With just a few weeks left of sport this year, let’s keep the momentum going! Show up, play hard, and finish 2025 with pride, passion, and Parklands spirit.
As we head into Quarter 4, please be reminded

It’s been another exciting week of summer sport at Parklands Prep!
🎾 Tennis
Our Tennis team continues their unbeaten streak, securing a dominant 6–0 victory! The team played with composure and class, showing great improvement across all matches. Player of the Match: Sophia for her precision and consistency throughout the day.
🏏 Cricket
Our cricketers faced tough competition this week:
U11 lost by 7 wickets, with Heath putting on an outstanding batting performance, scoring 43 runs and leading from the front.
U12 also went down by 7 wickets, but Ross impressed with both bat and ball, displaying strong all-round ability and determination.
Well done to all our players for their commitment, effort, and sportsmanship on and off the field. The hard work continues as we head into the final stretch of an exciting summer season!

BIRTHDAY BOOKS
We would like to thank Benjamin for his Birthday Book donation. This book is an addition to one of our much loved adventure series called Zeina Starborn and the Sky Whale by Hannah Durkan.
A story of a young girl who dreams of escaping the smog-filled city of Ravenport and visit the famous Willoughby Whale Hotel, a ginormous structure built on the back of a flying whale!
We are grateful for your support of our library.
LIBRARY LESSONS
This week during our library lessons, we introduced the latest Guinness World Records 2026 book. We watched videos showcasing some of these mind-boggling achievements, and the excitement in the room was palpable!
But we didn’t stop there. After being inspired by real-life record holders, our learners became imaginary record setters themselves and created their own record-breaking stories.
Staff First Aid Training
Last week staff from all campuses came together to do first aid training. This is one of the ways we ensure that our learners are safe on campus.
