Senior Preparatory Weekly Memo
5 September 2025
5 September 2025
Dear Parents
Please take note of the following:
SP Music Recital - Wednesday, 10 September 18:00
We look forward to this musical event and seeing our musicians shine on stage. Please note that all learners must be accompanied by an adult.
OPEN DAY - Saturday 13 September
SPCA Dress-up - 19 September
Come dressed up as your favourite animal.
Where is your child's iPad charging?
Please ensure that your child's device is not charging in their bedroom. This includes any device connected to the internet. In a recent interview with Emma Sadleir she said "When you give your child a smartphone it is the end of childhood". Let's give our children the best chance at being a child for as long as we can.
School Drop Off Time
Please ensure that learners arrive on time for the start of the academic day. Parents are welcome to drop their children off between 07:30 and 07:45 and are requested to use the Drop and Go Zone on the SP Campus in Wood Drive. Reminder that we do not have supervision for learners before 07:30 other than planned sports, dance and some tutorials arranged in advance.
The following slides have been developed collaboratively using AI and our ICT Acceptable User and AI policies.
Please use these slides each week as conversation starters with your child on responsible digital citizenship.
Happy Spring Day - 1 September
Bok Friday - 5 September
🌸Spring Has Sprung in Grade 6! 🌸
We welcomed the new season with joyful Spring Day celebrations and the classroom came alive with colour, energy, and creativity. Learners embraced the spirit of spring by dressing up in bright outfits, decorating with flowers and sharing in the excitement of new beginnings. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate together as a class community and the cheerful atmosphere carried into all our lessons for the week. 🌸🌞🌼
In Afrikaans, our focus was on Indirekte rede (indirect speech). Learners practised changing sentences from direct speech to indirect speech and explored the little details that make it tricky but fun.
A few helpful tips we worked with:
✨ Remove the quotation marks when reporting speech.
✨ Pay careful attention to the verb, it moves to the end of the sentence.
✨ Don’t forget that we often use dat to join the two parts of the sentence.
With these tools in hand, learners are becoming more confident in spotting and applying the differences between direct and indirect speech.
In PSW, we explored the theme of conflict resolution by watching a video that gave learners practical tips for solving disagreements — especially those that come up with siblings or friends. The video reminded us that conflict is normal, but how we respond makes all the difference. Learners discussed the importance of listening carefully, staying calm instead of reacting in anger, and choosing words that build others up rather than break them down. They reflected on their own experiences and shared strategies they could use in real-life situations. These conversations encouraged learners to reflect on kindness, empathy, and how they can contribute to creating a more peaceful environment, both at school and at home. 💚
In English, we worked on understanding the difference between active and passive voice in sentences. Learners discovered that in the active voice, the subject does the action (e.g., The dog chased the cat), while in the passive voice, the subject receives the action (e.g., The cat was chased by the dog).
Some useful tips included:
🖊️ If you want your sentence to be more direct and lively, choose active voice.
🖊️ Passive voice is useful when the doer of the action is unknown or not important (e.g., The window was broken).
🖊️ Watch out for the verb “to be” (was, were, is) followed by the past participle — that’s often a sign you’re in passive voice.
Learners practised switching sentences between active and passive, which gave them more flexibility in their writing.
In Maths, we explored the calendar. We discovered that the ancient Egyptians were the first to invent a calendar to help them predict when the Nile River would flood. It was fascinating to see how something we use every day has such a long history.
For our "Real Life for Kids" project, we began working on our city projects. We teamed up with our classmates to design and build different parts of a city, like an airport, a stadium, a hotel, and a school. We're thrilled to showcase all the incredible things we have been creating! Have a look at the Real Life for Kids world for 5P...
Our Life Skills lesson turned us into water awareness warriors! We worked hard on creating our own adverts to share important information and practical tips on how to save water. It's a great way to spread the word about something so vital.
In English and FAL, we've been practicing our oral presentations. This has given us a chance to reflect on and share all the wonderful projects we've worked on this term.
Grade 5 Outreach
A friendly reminder: this is the last week we are collecting roll-on deodorants. Please remember to bring them in if you can, and add in a few chocolates for the 100 care packages we are making for Ria Abel Retirement home.
🦒 Adventure Alert! 18 September - The Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness Centre awaits! Complete the Google Form – this will be unforgettable!
🌸 Spring Day Celebrations: Our Grade 4s kicked off the week in style by celebrating Spring Day! Learners came dressed in bright colours, flower crowns, and cheerful accessories, turning the school into a festival of colour. The atmosphere was joyful and festive, with laughter, sunshine, and plenty of spring spirit.
📖 English Adventures: In English, our learners became curious interviewers as they asked their classmates all about their thoughts and feelings on our set workbook, James and the Giant Peach. The interviews led to thoughtful reflections, surprising discoveries, and lots of laughter as learners compared their different perspectives on the story’s characters and adventures.
🌍 Life Skills Learning: For Life Skills, the Grade 4s proudly completed their Culture Project, exploring the many unique and diverse cultures found in South Africa. Learners shared their findings on clothing, food, music, traditions, and celebrations, gaining a deeper appreciation of the beauty and richness of our country’s heritage.
🦁 Afrikaans Fun: In Afrikaans, learners studied a real advert and enjoyed exciting class discussions about what makes adverts catchy and effective. Inspired by this, they created their very own adverts in Afrikaans, for their own wildtuin! The results were filled with creativity, humour, and originality!
The future requires people who are innovative, humanity-centred, relationship-oriented, compassion-focused, values-driven, globally-conscious and planet-sensitive, in order to guarantee that this generation will become REAL agents of change. The values necessary to sustain life on earth, as humans and environmentalists, are incorporated in five global competencies across our curriculum under our “Growing Minds” banner: Critical Thinkers, Effective Communicators, Purposeful Collaborators, Creative Agents and Responsible Citizens.
In assembly this week we awarded the following learners growing minds shields. Congratulations to each of you and well done on being nominated for this award.
Effective Communicator

Purposeful Collaborator
We are very proud of our Trinity Music candidates. Congratulations to Sinesipho and Imogen for Initial Grade, Sophia for Grade 2, Talia and Brynn for Grade 3 and Elise for Grade 6.
Prestige Music Concert
Please remember to support our Musicians at our Prestige Music Concert on Wednesday, 10 September at 18:00. Please note that all learners must be accompanied by an adult.
This week, the learners received their certificates from the Western Cape Virtual Eisteddfod. We are so proud of their shining music, drama and art results!
Art Entries from the Western Cape Virtual Eisteddfod
It’s been an exciting week in our robotics spaces! All our robotics teams participated in a workshop on diversity and equity, where they acquired valuable skills through games and discussions led by our school's Diversity and Equity Committee.
Our WRO teams are in full preparation mode for nationals, just one week away, and the excitement (and anticipation!) is definitely building.
In Class Robotics, our Grade 5 and 6 learners have been diving deep into SPIKE robots. They’ve explored how the interface works, learned to use sensor values to improve their code, and discovered what a drive base does—and how to enhance it! They’ve also been learning about pseudocode, commenting, and using sensors like the force, distance, and color sensors. Using repeat blocks and if-then blocks, they’ve been coding the Lego Spike Base robots to complete a variety of tasks - putting their coding skills and problem-solving to the test.
It’s been a week full of teamwork, creativity, and robotics challenges, and we can’t wait to see what the learners come up with next!
Help us reach our goal to create 100 care packages for the residents of Ria Abel Retirement Home. Each grade has been assigned specific items to collect, grade 4s tooth brushes, grade 5s roll on deodorants and grade 6s soap and wash cloths. We also hope to add mini chocolates to each care package as a small, thoughtful treat. Any donations toward this are warmly welcomed.
The final date for collections is next week Friday 12 September 2025. Help us reach our target of 100 care packs.
Thank you for your ongoing generosity and support. Together we can brighten someone’s day and remind our elderly community members that they are seen, valued and cared for.
We are excited to host a fun-filled SPCA Dress Up Day in support of our local SPCA. Learners may come dressed as their favourite animal, and R10 will be billed to your account if your child participates. The SPCA works tirelessly to care for and protect animals in need, and this is a wonderful way for our learners to show their support while having fun.
With just two full weeks left of this quarter, the Sports Department would like to extend a big thank you to each and every one of you for your ongoing support and encouragement. The positive energy from our parents, guardians, and community has made a real difference – our learners have grown in confidence and performance because of it!

Traditionally, the first week of September is dedicated to Arbor Week in South Africa, a celebration of the importance of trees in our communities.
Our 4A class did a wonderful presentation of Arbor week in assembly this week. We enjoyed some fun facts and language-based activities in library lessons, to inspire awareness and ownership of this vital resource in our environment.
