What Are We Reading?
This week we have started introducing a Roald Dahl book to our younger children that many of them do not seem to know yet. It was published in 1991, shortly after Dahl's death in November 1990. Billy is a little boy who lives on the edge of a dark forest, and his mum has forbidden him to ever go out the garden gate. So, one day, that is exactly what he does. In the forest he meets the Minpins, tiny people who live in hollow trees. They live in fear of a terrible creature, the Gruncher, and Billy must find a way to finally defeat the terrible beast. The children are immediately charmed by the fabulous Dahl words, as Billy’s mother warns him about whangdoodles, hornswogglers, snozzwanglers and vermicious knids. Totally irresistible!
In the senior preparatory, the Grade 5 and 6 classes are revisiting the Prey Zone trilogy by WIlbur Smith as the third book will be arriving soon. This famous author has played a vast role in documenting the history of Africa, often told through the lives of generations of the fictional Courtney and Ballantyne families. Before his death in 2021, he had started to expand these adventures to teen readers, first as a mini series featuring teenager Jack Courtney, and then the first of the Prey Zone books about the two Ballantyne children who live on a crocodile ranch in South Africa, These are very exciting adventure for our 11+ readers, who also find it interesting that the series can continue after Smith’s death through the co-authors that he collaborated with.
