Drop off and Collection
Please ensure that learners arrive on time for the start of the academic day. Parents are welcome to drop their children off between 07:30 and 07:45 and are requested to use the Drop and Go Zone on the SP Campus in Wood Drive.
Parents may pull into the yellow zone for learners to get out and walk into school on their own. Please do not park or leave your car in the Drop and Go Zone.
All learners must be clocked in and ready for the day before 07:45. Learners who attend early morning activities must clock-in before attending their session in order to avoid being recorded as 'Late Arrival' on the biometric system.
Last Day of School
Wednesday 25 June is the last day of school and school closes at 13h00. Please make arrangements to collect your child promptly at 13h00 as there are no aftercare facilities on this day.
Photo Credit: Thank you to Ms Prinsloo for taking such wonderful photos for our memo each week. What an incredible photo of our beautiful school in the winter quarter.
What a week! As we wrap up an incredible quarter, our Grade 6 learners continue to rise to every opportunity—this time, stepping into the spotlight as true leaders.
Mission Possible: Assembly Takeover!
This week, our Grade 6 Monitors ran the entire school assembly from start to finish—and what an impressive job they did! With confidence, poise and enthusiasm, they led the assembly and left the school with a powerful message:
Be the teammate who lifts others up.
Be the leader who keeps going—even when it’s tough.
Be the one who dares to try something new—even if you don’t know all the rules yet.
It was a moment of true leadership!

Animation in Action! Bringing Madagascar to Life
Creative energy continues to flow in the art room as learners animate scenes for our Madagascar production. From flowing water to drifting snow, their digital backgrounds are beginning to move—literally! Using Anamatic, they’ve turned their artwork into mini-animations that will light up the stage.
This blend of art, animation and storytelling has not only supported their digital literacy, but also allowed them to express themselves in creative and meaningful ways.
The excitement is building and the production is already looking spectacular thanks to their dedication!
English: The Firework-Maker’s Daughter
In English, we continued exploring our Quarter 2 novel – The Firework-Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman. Learners are captivated by Lila’s brave journey and the magical world she navigates.
Through reading and discussion, we’ve looked at themes like courage, perseverance, and identity, while also working on skills like character analysis, inference and response to text. Lila’s journey has sparked wonderful connections to our own dreams and the challenges we face when chasing them!
Bridge Building!
And in Afrikaans the Grade 6s have been writing songs on trappe van vergelyking...
This week our Grade 5s have been busy developing skills across multiple subjects and showing real growth in their learning journey.
In English, learners put their investigative skills to the test through report writing exercises. They practised gathering information, structuring their articles, and presenting facts in clear, engaging ways. It's been exciting to see them think like real reporters as they work on crafting compelling stories.
Mathematics challenged the Grade 5s to put on their thinking caps as they tackled Maths Olympiad papers. These problem-solving exercises pushed them to apply their mathematical knowledge in creative ways and develop their reasoning skills. The determination and persistence they showed while working through complex problems was truly impressive.
Meanwhile, our space adventure is reaching its exciting conclusion. Learners are putting the finishing touches on their space presentations, and the anticipation is building as they prepare to share everything they've discovered with the Grade 6 classes. The depth of knowledge they've gained has been remarkable to witness.
It has been wonderful to see our Grade 5s embrace challenges across various subjects while supporting one another's learning. Their enthusiasm and dedication continue to make teaching such a rewarding experience.
Grade 4 Scavenger Hunt Success in Geography!
What an exhilarating day we had! During our Geography lesson, enthusiastic Grade 4 detectives set off on a scavenger hunt across the school grounds, armed with iPads as cameras and curiosity. Their mission? Capture both the front and side views of various objects and determine whether each was man-made or natural.
The energy was electric as they raced to spot objects like benches, and fountains, snapping photos from different angles. Along the way, the most surprising discoveries were those “natural” elements that turned out to be cleverly crafted by human hands and the reverse! This fun, photo-based scavenger hunt not only got them outdoors but also honed their observational skills just like the photography-led hunt idea where learners “capture images of items rather than collecting them”
Learning through adventure is what fieldwork is all about - exploring, documenting, and discussing what they find. Our Grade 4s demonstrated impressive curiosity, and sharp classification skills as they categorised, questioned, and reframed their understanding of “natural” vs. “man-made.”
A big well done to our explorers for their enthusiasm and energy. These real-world discoveries make Geography come alive and it was a joy to see them so engaged!
Report Percentages and Codes For Quarter Two
In Grade 4 – 6, informal and formal assessments for Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 are added together and weighted according to the revised CAPS requirements for 2025 as stipulated by the Department of Basic Education. The combined mark is displayed as a percentage and code under the heading called Autumn Quarter on the report.
In order for learners to progress to the next grade, they need to meet the following minimum requirements at the end of the academic year for Grade 4, 5 and 6:
50% in English HL
40% in Afrikaans FAL / isiXhosa FAL
40% in Mathematics
40% in the remaining subjects
Report Feedback Meetings
Reports will be shared with parents on Friday, 20 June. Report feedback meetings will take place from Friday, 20 June – Tuesday, 24 June. Parents will receive an email from their child’s class teacher sharing the link to their Google Calendar page for report feedback bookings. Appointments are usually 15 mins in length. We greatly value our parents’ and teachers’ time and urge parents to be on time in order to ensure that other parents are not kept waiting.
The future requires people who are innovative, humanity-centred, relationship-oriented, compassion-focused, values-driven, globally-conscious and planet-sensitive, in order to guarantee that this generation will become REAL agents of change. The values necessary to sustain life on earth, as humans and environmentalists, are incorporated in five global competencies across our curriculum under our “Growing Minds” banner: Critical Thinkers, Effective Communicators, Purposeful Collaborators, Creative Agents and Responsible Citizens.
In assembly this week we awarded the following learners growing minds shields. Congratulations to each of you and well done on being nominated for this award.

Parklands College Preparatory Faculty presents DreamWorks Madagascar – A Musical Adventure JR.
DreamWorks Madagascar – A Musical Adventure JR. features original music and lyrics by George Noriega and Joel Someillan, and book by Kevin Del Aguila.
As the show opens, we learn that Marty the zebra may be celebrating his tenth birthday at the Central Park Zoo with his friends Alex the lion, Gloria the hippo, and Melman the giraffe, yet he longs to experience life outside of the zoo’s walls. When Marty eventually escapes, his animal friends from the zoo pursue him into New York City. After reuniting, the animals are chased by the police, and ultimately felled by tranquilliser darts. They awake, trapped in crates, on a ship, which, through a series of events, is thrown off course. Upon reaching land, the animals discover they have been shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar. Ultimately, it is only in being so lost that they can begin to discover where they really belong.
Every Grade 4 - 6 learner as well as every Grade R - 3 dancer is getting ready to Move it! We hope to see you join in the fun too! Tickets can be purchased on Quicket.
Just like that, we’ve drawn all official sports matches to a close for Quarter 2! But don’t pack away those boots just yet - we’re not done for the quarter! Practices will continue (yes, even on what would’ve been match days!) right up until 20 June, and PE lessons will run until the final day of the quarter. So please keep sending sports bags, equipment, and of course, warm tracksuits - it’s a chilly one out there!
What an incredible second quarter of 2025 it’s been - our first full winter sports quarter this year, and one packed with memorable moments, milestones, and standout performances!
From Netball to Soccer, Rugby to Hockey, our learners have stepped up, grown, and embraced every opportunity. A special shoutout goes to our Boys Hockey teams who proudly competed in league fixtures for the first time ever! And of course, we couldn’t be prouder of our U10 Netball girls who made it all the way to the WP Play-offs, finishing 4th out of 35 schools - an incredible achievement and a first for Parklands!
📣 Coming Up in Quarter 3:
Mark your calendars - 15–16 August is our biggest Sports Derby yet, against Somerset College at Parklands Secondary! You’re all invited to come support our teams in what promises to be an action-packed, high-energy celebration of school sport. This is not one to miss!
Sport and training will resume in Week 1 of Quarter 3, as we gear up for a packed fixture list filled with derby days, league games, and festivals across all codes.
🕒 Our Friday Sports Hour remains the same heading into Quarter 3 - so make sure winter kit is ready to go for what’s shaping up to be a brisk July and August.
To all our players, coaches, and parents - thank you for your dedication, loud support, and tireless effort this term. Quarter 3 promises even more excitement, and we can’t wait to get going again after the break!
Let’s keep the fire burning and the spirit high!
Jared Margetts
Congratulations to Matthew on being selected for the Karate South Africa National Team and for competing in the UFAK Region South Championships, where he earned a bronze medal.
Matthew has also been awarded full Karate South Africa Colours — a remarkable achievement!
Please find a link to the notification letter informing the College of a learner's external achievements at Area/Regional/Provincial level.
The arrival of a new book by one of our favourite authors is always an event to be celebrated. David Walliams’ “World’s Worst” collection is inviting, as each book contains ten short stories, accessible to readers who are not quite brave enough to tackle a longer novel. This time the characters are as hilarious as can be expected from this funny man: meet Wonderqueen, The Incredible Sprout, Dino-Kid, The Astounding Flea-Man, Thunderhound and five more surprising (and unlikely) superheroes.
Lots of laughs guaranteed, and what we also love about these books from a library perspective, is the quality: great illustrations in colour, printed on excellent paper. They are built to withstand the rigours of a library book’s hard life!
Our library classes are still focussed on environmental issues. Learners had the opportunity to have a close encounter with some of the ocean’s largest creatures, using an augmented reality book from the iExplore series and the iOceans app.
But that’s not all, our learners also tested their knowledge with a Kahoot! about oceans. The interactive quiz sparked fun competition, making learning about oceans an engaging and enjoyable experience. It is always exciting to see our learners having so much fun while learning!
Teamwork, Coding & Creativity in Action! 🤖
In Class Robotics learners have been hard at work preparing for the Level One World Robotics Challenge (In-House Competition)! Working in teams, they’ve been building, testing, and refining their robot solutions to complete this exciting challenge.
Through this process, learners have developed key skills including problem-solving, teamwork, critical thinking, coding, and engineering design. It's been incredible to see their perseverance and creativity shine as they work together to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
