Senior Preparatory Weekly Memo
11 April 2025
11 April 2025
Dear Parents
It was wonderful to see so many excited faces come into school on Tuesday morning. It is just not the same here without you!
We wasted no time getting started this quarter and jumped into teaching and our full co-curricular programme on day one.
We will be sending out a parent survey on Monday, April 14, 2025. This survey is conducted every two years, and we would greatly appreciate you taking a few minutes to complete it as your input is greatly valued and provides us with important feedback.
We have exciting news - we will be opening a new grade 5 class after the Mid-Term break!
Madagascar Fever has already started and learners are busy making costumes in Art, learning lines in Drama and learning new songs in Music - we like to move it, move it...
We are delighted to welcome Mrs Trisha Govender to the College as our new Grade 5K class teacher. She will be joining us from Thursday 17 April and we will open the new class when we return from the mid-term break on 5 May, in winter uniform.
Mrs Govender will spend time visiting all three of our existing classes during the final week of April so that the children get to know her and then the learners can decide whether they would like to be placed in the new class. Note that not all requests will necessarily be able to be accommodated.
Please take note of the following important upcoming dates and reminders:

Hooked on Books - 11 April at 10:30

Kicking Off Quarter 2 in Grade 6 Style!
What a vibrant start we’ve had in Grade 6! From building bustling shopping centres to racing through maths challenges, our first week of Quarter 2 has been jam-packed with creativity, curiosity and loads of learning fun!
Afrikaans Adventures in the "Winkelsentrum"!
This week in Afrikaans, we stepped into the world of winkelsentrums - shopping centres! Using our iPads, learners became mini-architects, designing their very own winkelsentrums filled with everything from bookstores to ice cream parlours. They then used their new vocabulary to describe what’s duur (expensive) and what’s goedkoop (cheap) in their shops, practising real-life language skills in the most fun way!
Extra! Extra! Read All About It!
In English, we became junior journalists! Our classroom transformed into a newsroom as we explored newspaper articles - headlines, leads and all the juicy details that hook a reader in. We discussed how journalists grab attention and keep their audience informed and entertained. From wild weather reports to sports showdowns, our imaginations ran wild!
Next stop: writing our own front-page news!
Maths Mania!
Hold onto your protractors—this week in Maths we zoomed through place value puzzles, untangled parallel and perpendicular lines and challenged ourselves with some speedy speed tests!
Place value had us thinking big (and small), using games and challenges to stretch our number knowledge.
Parallel and perpendicular lines came to life. We looked at different types of lines and how they interact - some run alongside each other like besties and others meet up at just the right angles!
And our speed tests? Let’s just say, there were some serious brain sprints happening!

We’re off to an amazing start and can’t wait to see what the rest of the quarter has in store!
We’ve had a fantastic and energetic start to Quarter 2, warmly welcoming our enthusiastic Grade 5 learners and their families — including some wonderful new faces! We jumped straight into our exciting learning journey, delving into the fascinating world of early Southern Africa as we compared the lives of the First Farmers, herders, and hunter-gatherers. In English, we explored the importance of clear, detailed instructions and how they help us complete tasks successfully. In Maths, we revisited key concepts from Quarter 1 and eagerly began uncovering the clever tricks behind number patterns.
The start of the second quarter brought fresh energy and excitement to our classrooms! In History, we launched our new theme by exploring the question: What is a leader? The learners enjoyed lively discussions about leadership and the qualities that make someone inspiring and effective.
In Mathematics, there was a real buzz in the air as the learners created their very own GIFs using Keynote! This fun and creative activity gave them a chance to practise and reinforce the times tables they’ve been finding most challenging. It’s been a fantastic start to the quarter, filled with curiosity, creativity, and lots of learning!
Thank you to those who have already donated marshmallow eggs. It isn't too late to contribute to this worthy cause. The marshmallow eggs will be shared with senior citizens in our community as well as our neighbouring schools.
Welcome Back to Senior Preparatory Autumn Sport – Game On! 🏉🏑🏐
Welcome back, Senior Prep families, to an exciting Quarter 2 of sport at Parklands College Prep! From the first whistle, it’s been all systems go as our learners jumped straight into their Rugby, Hockey, and Netball sessions with determination and drive. The fields and courts have come alive again with focus, flair, and fantastic team spirit.
We’re also excited to share that Golf will be teeing off next week, offering even more variety and opportunity for skill development in our co-curricular program.
As we step into a busy, competitive, and rewarding quarter packed with fixtures, festivals, and inter-school challenges, we encourage every learner to take on something new – whether it’s stepping into a different sport, refining a skill, or embracing leadership and teamwork in a fresh way.
✨ “Every champion was once a beginner who refused to give up.” ✨
This term is about pushing boundaries, growing in confidence, and enjoying every step of the sporting journey – win, lose, or learn.
A massive thank you to all our parents for your continued encouragement and support. Your presence at matches and practices makes all the difference, and we can’t wait to hear your cheers ringing out from the sidelines.
Here’s to a bold, brilliant Quarter 2 – we’re ready to tackle it head-on, together.
Let’s go, Parklands Prep! 💙💛

Drama Society started off with a bang - literally. Sound effects and reactions to them proved to be an exciting theme.
Our Madagascar rehearsals started in earnest with our leading characters. We’re excited to "Move It" this quarter.
WORLD BOOK DAY IS COMING!
Lots of laughs, huge excitement and that unstoppable urge to get hold of these books: it can only mean an encounter with Hooked On Books, our favourite theatre company. This morning we had a roaring start leading up to World Book Day as these talented actors gave us a peek into a few amazing books. There was the young genius who accidentally turned her teacher into a pigeon, as well as a new adventure of the famous Diamond brothers. We also got to experience a part of the wonderful Zeina Starborn and the Sky Whale, a magical adventure series. Add in some funky poems and we are all set to read!
Birthday Books
Happy birthday to Yoriola, and thank you so much for the exciting Famous Five adventure.
Wishing our incredible FTC robotics team the very best of luck as they head off to Houston, Texas to compete in the World Championships!
Your hard work, teamwork, and innovation have already taken you so far — now it’s time to shine on the global stage!
We are so proud of you. Go make magic happen!
