Senior Preparatory Weekly Memo
17 April 2026
17 April 2026
Dear Parents
Please take note of the following:
Design Society starts this week (Wednesday / Thursday)
World Book Day Dress Up on Thursday 23 April
Change to Winter Uniform on 4 May
We welcome Miss Kirsty-Leigh Becker, who will be joining us as our new Senior Preparatory Art and Library teacher. Miss Becker will also be teaching Design Society on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
She can be contacted on kbecker@parklands.co.za
Get ready to bring your favourite stories to life! We are so excited to celebrate World Book Day and we can’t wait to see our hallways transformed into a living library. Whether you're a wizard, a whimsical fairy, or a brave detective, it’s time to let your imagination run wild!
To make sure the day is as wonderful as a fairy tale ending, here are a few "happily ever after" guidelines:
✨All learners are invited to dress up as their favourite book character! Try to make your costume distinct enough that we can guess who you are without even asking.
✨Dress-up days are all about the theme! If you’d rather not dress up, you are more than welcome to wear your school tracksuit or PE kit instead. (Please note: This isn't a "civvies" day, so it’s either the theme or your school PE kit!)
Face Paint: You are welcome to add some small details like a flower, a star, or a flag!
Hair & Jewellery: Even in costume, we are proud representatives of the College. Please keep hair neat, tidy and tied back away from your eyes. Jewellery should be kept to a minimum.
To keep everyone safe and focused on the fun, please avoid:
Full Makeup / Makeup (Stick to small face-paint accents!)
Crop tops or revealing clothing
Ripped jeans
Flip-flops or "plakkies" or Crocs (We need sturdy shoes for safe adventures!)
Expensive items (Let’s keep your treasures safe at home so they don't get lost or broken.)
We can’t wait to see which characters walk through our doors! Let’s make this World Book Day one for the history books! 📖✨
We are excited to announce that Parklands College Secondary Faculty will be hosting a Space Educators Conference during World Space Week in October.
Our Quarter 2 academic programme is in full swing and our teachers have prepared a structured and engaging curriculum, ensuring that each lesson builds meaningfully on the last. New concepts are introduced daily, and informal assessments are conducted regularly to monitor progress and support each learner’s development.
School Attendance
We wish to remind parents and learners that regular school attendance is crucial. Long-term absentees and extended vacations can result in learners missing these key learning opportunities. Please assist us by ensuring your child attends school regularly and punctually.
Please see our Learner Attendance Policy for further details.
Please note that a doctor's certificate is required if a learner is absent for a formal assessment. Please contact the Principal (pmayers@parklands.co.za) or Head of Academics (ldrawbridge@parklands.co.za) to ask for permission for your child to be absent for any other reason.
Informal Assessments
Our learners are in the process of completing various informal assessments, which are integrated into the daily class activities throughout the quarter. All informal assessments are completed at school and no studying is required.
Formal Assessments
A reminder to click on the specific grade assessment calendars on the academic tab to see your child's formal assessment schedule and study details. The study details are posted at least two weeks before the assessment. Please check calendars regularly to stay updated.
Our Grade 6 "marine biologists" had a whale of a time on our outing to the Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront! It was an absolute joy to watch the learners swap their textbooks for tide pools as we explored the incredible magic of our South African oceans.
From the moment we arrived, the energy was electric! Here’s a little peek at what our young explorers got up to:
Shoreline Superstars: We braved the "rocky shores" of the Atlantic Seaboard, meeting the resilient critters that call the coastline home and learning how they dance to the rhythm of the tides.
Eco-Heroes in Training: The learners dove headfirst into the world of biodiversity, mastering the art of classification and untangling the complex webs of marine food chains.
Guardians of the Deep: We had some truly heart-to-heart chats about marine sustainability. The learners walked away with a deep understanding of why our oceans need us, focusing on everything from seafood choices to keeping our beaches plastic-free.
The learners were full of curiosity, great questions and plenty of smiles.
Space Science!
Our learners recently created and presented an engaging and thought-provoking Nutrition in Space project, where they explored the fascinating challenges astronauts face when it comes to food in space. They investigated how food is carefully packaged and preserved to remain safe, nutritious, and suitable for zero-gravity conditions.
Taking their learning a step further, learners applied their knowledge creatively by designing their own astronaut food products. They carefully selected and justified ingredients that would enhance nutrition, energy, and overall well-being for astronauts on space missions.
This exciting activity encouraged critical thinking, creativity, and real-world application of scientific concepts, as learners combined their understanding of nutrition with innovation to solve challenges beyond Earth!
Winning Digital Mission Patches
Last week in Art all of our Grade 6s were tasked in designing a Welcome Home Mission Patch which were posted on Social Media as the Artemis II Astronauts landed in the Ocean in the early hours of Saturday Morning. Thank you to our Secondary Faculty Art Teacher, Mr Frederick, who judged the submissions! Below are the winning designs.

Digital Art Learning Games
In Art this week the Grade 6s used keynote and shapes to design a digital version of the game Colour Code by Smart Games. The games stimulates the cognitive skills of visual perception, planning, concentration, problem solving and flexible thinking. Each learner was tasked to design 3 levels in which you had to manipulate shapes and layer them together to build a picture of shapes. Ask them to show you what they designed and see if you can crack the colour code…
What an incredible week in Grade 5! In Maths, we've been levelling up from our Q1 column method, tackling multiplication and short division like pros! In English, we're sharpening our spelling, diving into comprehension, and becoming master instruction writers. Our History lesson had us travelling back in time as we relived our amazing trip to the San culture village, sparking fantastic conversations about how their way of life compares to ours. In Geography, we've been unearthing South Africa's fascinating mining history and there is so much to discover! In PSW, we had a really meaningful chat about why we post things online and the impact it has on us and those around us. And last but definitely not least, a massive congratulations to Sophia in 5P for her show-stopping solo in Assembly! We are so incredibly proud of you!

Assembly Performance
This week, we dove into the wonderful story Fantastic Mr Fox! As we explore the book together, we’ll take a closer look at the characters and discuss their traits to build a deeper understanding of the story. We have also been focusing on expanding vocabulary and strengthening reading skills throughout the week. They also worked on learning about what makes a good poster and created beautiful posters for our dress up day next week.
In addition, we have been learning about leaders from around the world in History and discussing what makes someone a good leader. We’ve explored the idea that anyone can be a leader and that leadership is not about popularity, but about qualities such as responsibility, kindness and making good choices.
The future requires people who are innovative, humanity-centered, relationship-oriented, compassion-focused, values-driven, globally-conscious, and planet-sensitive, in order to guarantee that this generation will become REAL agents of change. The values necessary to sustain life on earth, as humans and environmentalists, are incorporated in five global competencies across our curriculum under our “Growing Minds” banner: Critical Thinkers, Effective Communicators, Purposeful Collaborators, Creative Agents and Responsible Citizens.
In assembly this week, we awarded Aria the Effective Communicator Shield.
There were many standout moments at last quarter’s inter-house gala, but Ariya's growth in confidence and communication truly set her apart. Not only did she complete in more than one 25m event independently, without any flotation aid or assistance, but she also showed remarkable maturity in the way she communicated with her teachers and coaches. She was honest about what she felt confident to attempt, and equally brave in expressing where she felt unsure. That self-awareness, paired with her determination and resilience, made her performance incredibly powerful. Ariya's willingness to keep trying, no matter the challenge, is something to be truly proud of. Coach Nadine, and all of us are so proud of her progress and the courage she continues to show. Coach Nadine reminds her to Keep believing in herself, keep communicating clearly, and keep showing us what is possible.

Our Science Club learners had an exciting and hands-on session filled with discovery and creativity! They explored the wonders of magnetism by creating their own DIY compasses, gaining a deeper understanding of how magnets interact with the Earth’s magnetic field.
The fun continued with a fascinating lemon volcano experiment, where learners observed chemical reactions in action, followed by an engaging invisible ink presentation that revealed the science behind secret messages.
This dynamic session sparked curiosity and encouraged learners to think like young scientists, experimenting, observing, and uncovering the magic of science in everyday materials.
Our Science learners had an unforgettable experience at Saturday’s exciting Rocket Workshop, led by rocket expert Nikolai Nielsen. With great enthusiasm and teamwork, learners designed and built their very own rockets, sparking curiosity and a deeper interest in engineering and space science. The anticipation is high as we eagerly look forward to launching these creations in the near future!
Adding to the excitement, our Secondary Faculty Physics teacher, Mr Duffield, captivated learners with dynamic demonstrations on combustion reactions. These thrilling experiments brought science to life, allowing learners to observe powerful and visually exciting chemical reactions firsthand.
The workshop was a wonderful blend of hands-on learning and scientific discovery, inspiring our learners to explore, question, and dream big!
Enrichment course or preparation for the DELF CERTIFCATE A1
French is the international language of the theatre, visual arts, dance, architecture, haute cuisine and fashion. Knowing some French also gives you direct access to the great literature and songs of the French and francophone culture, especially in Africa.
Here at Parklands College Preparatory Faculty the French enrichment course is not just about learning French grammar and vocabulary, but also getting acquainted with the culture and traditions of the French and our Francophone countries in Africa. The learners will be exposed to an interesting cultural component to make their French lessons motivational
and meaningful. Our learners will learn how to connect with French speakers by greeting, asking a few questions, counting and they will be able to even sing and entertain their families in French!
Lessons are presented by Mme Bailly at 7h00 every Friday in room 13. These lessons are at no additional costs and all learners are welcome.
WORLD BOOK DAY CELEBRATIONS
Excitement is at an all-time high as we count down to our World Book celebrations which will take place next week. We kick off on Tuesday with two performances by the vibrant Hooked On Books theatre company when they showcase a selection of books for the junior and senior preparatory learners.
Our Book Sale which will feature a special selection for the preparatory age groups, will be found in the back of the hall on Wednesday and Thursday. This is a great opportunity to stock up on an all-important supply of current children’s books. Parents are welcome to visit the sale before school from 07:30, and after school till 15:00 each day.
World Book Day is on Thursday, and staff and children will transform into book characters for the morning.
BIRTHDAY BOOKS
Happy birthday and thank you for a wonderful book donation to Kahlia, who celebrated her birthday this week. Nancy Drew and an adventure on a train! It can only be a delectable treat for all mystery enthusiasts. And to make her birthday even more memorable, Kahlia also chose book 9.5 in the magnificent Keeper Of The Lost Cities series, which is a marvellous fantasy series that all Harry Potter fans will enjoy.
Quarter 2 and 3 Co-curricular Sign-up Form
The winter season is officially in top gear, and the energy across the campus is electric. From the physical grit on the rugby fields to the silent, tactical battles in the chess room, our Senior Prep learners are proving that they are ready for the challenges ahead. It’s been a fantastic week of growth, and we are thrilled to see our athletes and players flourishing in their respective arenas.
The calendar is packed, and the competition is heating up. Next week, we continue our momentum across all disciplines:
On the Grass: Rugby
On the Astro: Hockey (Boys & Girls)
On the Courts: Netball
In the Hot Seat: Chess
We have moved past the early-season jitters and are now focused on fine-tuning our skills. Coaches are working on the "one-percenters" - those small tactical adjustments and technical improvements that make all the difference when the whistle blows. As we head into our weekly league matches, the stakes are higher, but so is the level of play. It’s no longer just about participation; it’s about execution, teamwork, and representing the school with pride.
Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out. As you step onto the field or sit down at the board this week, remember that every drill and every practice session has prepared you for this moment. Play hard, play fair, and most importantly, play for each other.
Let’s keep that Senior Prep spirit high as we head into the league season. We’ll see you on the sidelines (and at the boards)!
It was a stellar week of competition for our Senior Prep athletes! The hard work on the practice courts is clearly paying off, as our teams displayed clinical skill and fantastic sportsmanship in their latest fixtures.
While many of our teams were in action, our netballers truly stole the spotlight this week with some dominant performances against CBC.
The netball courts were buzzing with energy, and our girls delivered two incredible wins. The focus and teamwork on display were second to none.
U11 Team: A masterclass in both defence and attack! Our U11s secured a massive 11-0 victory. To keep a clean sheet in netball is no small feat, showing just how disciplined the team remained throughout the match.
Players of the Match (POTM): Mihle and Sarah for their exceptional contributions to the win.
U12 Team: In a hard-fought and tactical match, our U12s showed their grit and composure to come away with a solid 7-3 win.
Player of the Match (POTM): Olu, for leading the charge and maintaining high intensity until the final whistle.
Teamwork makes the dream work. These results are a testament to the effort put in during our training sessions. It’s not just about the final score, but the way our learners support one another on and off the court.
Congratulations to all our players - let’s carry this momentum and positive spirit into next week’s matches!
We wish our Netball U12 Touring Side an incredible tournament at the Knysna Festival next weekend. Thank you to Mrs Marais-Swart and Miss Prinsloo for all the hard work in preparing our girls.
Friday Hockey Sports Hour
Please note, all Hockey learners will be transported to the Secondary Faculty for Hockey training on astro at 13h15 - 14h30. All learners will be transported back to Parklands College Senior Prep - no learner will be permitted to be picked up from the Secondary campus.
Please find a link to the form to notify the College of a learner's external achievements at Area/Regional/Provincial level. We request that you upload an image to the form where possible. Any queries to our Head of Sport, Coach Jared - jmargetts@parklands.co.za
Maia did her first Nationals in Lifesaving championships in Port Elizabeth over the holiday and achieved amazing 3rd place in Long run. We are super proud as she has only been doing lifesaving for 3 months and went to finals in Mali and bodyboard as well.
Sebastian competed in the Western Cape Dinghy Championships, held in Saldanha from 3 to 6 April 2026, sailing in the Optimist A fleet. The Optimist A fleet includes boys and girls aged 10 to 15. This was only Sebastian’s second regatta in the A fleet.
The Cape Classic Series consists of three dinghy sailing regattas that are hosted by the Western Cape’s top yacht clubs. Over the three regattas, Sebastian tied as overall winner for Optimist B fleet for the series based on the point system awarded for each regatta.
Lara recently competed in the City Cirque Classic Aerial Competition and achieved a Gold Medal in Aerial Silks for her performance. In addition to winning her category, Lara also earned the third-highest score overall out of all the athletes who competed, both juniors and seniors.
Jean-Louis delivered an incredible performance at the Lifesaving South Africa Championships Nationals, competing over three intense days.
🥇 1st in Flags (South African Champion)
🥈 2nd in Bodyboard
🥉 3rd in Sprints
He also finished 3rd overall in the country in his age group, a fantastic achievement.
A proud moment that reflects his hard work, dedication, and commitment to the sport.
If you've seen the new Project Hail Mary film, you'll know it follows a lone scientist who wakes up in space with no memory and has to save the world. But what you might not know is that the spacecraft in that story uses a very clever idea: it spins to create artificial gravity - just like a washing machine drum, but in space.
Our Grade 5 learners have taken that exact concept and run with it. They're participating in the Project Hail Mary Challenge, run by Space for Teachers, a non-profit that gives classroom teachers and their learners the chance to design real hardware for real microgravity flight. The challenge invites classes to design and build a small two-module rotating space station that generates artificial gravity through centripetal acceleration - the same physics that keeps water in a swinging bucket.
Our Grade 5s aren't doing a worksheet about space. They're doing the physics, making design decisions, and building something that could actually leave the ground.
Watching our Grade 5s think through center of mass, module weights, and rotation speeds has been genuinely exciting. These are ten and eleven-year-olds wrestling with real engineering problems — and doing it with enthusiasm. Space has a way of doing that to people. We'll share more as the submission comes together.
Please ensure that learners arrive on time for the start of the academic day. Parents are welcome to drop their children off between 07:30 and 07:45 and are requested to use the Drop and Go Zone on the SP Campus in Wood Drive.
Parents may pull into the yellow zone for learners to get out and walk into school on their own. Please do not park or leave your car in the Drop and Go Zone.
All learners must be clocked in and ready for the day before this 07:45. Learners who attend early morning activities must clock-in before attending their session in order to avoid being recorded as 'Late Arrival' on the biometric system.
Aftercare is a combined group of Grade 4-6 learners. Parents, please inform the College via email should you wish to make use of our aftercare facility. Learners may wear their Parklands College sports uniform. Learners attending Aftercare will be escorted to the venue. Parents who wish to make use of our aftercare facilities must please inform us via e-mail.
School is LOCKED promptly at 16h45 daily. Please assist us by ensuring that your child is collected on time allowing our dedicated staff to return home to their own families. A late collection fee of R250 per half-hour (or part thereof) will apply for children collected from aftercare after 17h00.
For safety reasons no learners are permitted to wait outside the College gates at any time.
Parents entering our campus are required to have a car identification sticker, which can be collected from reception. By displaying the sticker on your car, you will gain easy access to the College premises. Vehicles that do not have a sticker will be scanned. ‘At the Gate’ Access Solution is used by the College and involves drivers' and car license discs being scanned. This information is stored on a secure database off-site for future reference should the need arise. Pedestrians are also required to produce identification.
We request, for the safety of our learners, that parents and visitors who are on our campus during academic time also sign in at reception and receive a visitors badge. The badge must be returned to reception before leaving campus.
PARKLANDS COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH KLIKD FOR A DIGITAL SAFETY SOLUTION
Parenting in the digital age presents unique challenges. Balancing your child’s need for online interaction with the responsibility of keeping them safe can feel overwhelming. Excluding your child from the digital world might seem isolating, yet providing them with unrestricted access to smart devices without guidance can pose serious risks.
It is vital to equip our children with the skills they need to navigate the digital world confidently, responsibly, and safely. That’s why we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Klikd, South Africa’s leading digital safety and citizenship company. We will be rolling out Klikd’s Digital Citizenship Programme for Schools for Grades 4-6.

*When a YouTube short turns into buying frenzy: What Parents Need to Know About Influencer Culture on YouTube for Kids*
Your child opens YouTube and searches for something innocent.
• “Cute kitty”
• “Funny orange dog pooping”
• “Minions fall in the lake”
The video starts exactly as expected - fluffy cats, cheerful music, colourful animation.
Then something changes.
*The cat gets hurt. The animation becomes violent and grotesque. Now our kids are in deep!*😳😳🤡
For many children this moment is not just confusing or frightening. *IT IS TOTALLY ABSORBING* . Hiroshima could go off in their lounge and they wouldn’t lift their heads.
And most of us never know what is holding them so powerfully…earphones are in the car, or the kids are on the couch while we’re making supper.
*This type of bait-and-switch content is not new* - what is new is how often, in this heightened state of emotion, our kids are being exposed to influencers who are using this *‘ripe’ state of arousal, to sell sell and sell our kids STUFF.* 💰💰🏧🆘
*The New Twist: AI and the Attention Economy*
Creators can now generate huge volumes of videos quickly and cheaply. Using cute characters that include disturbing scenes designed to shock children and hold their attention, think:
• Elsa having a tooth extraction at the dentist, bleeding out in fear 👀🧠
• A cute kitten being whipped by her mommy for eating too much food. 👀🧠
• Peppa pig in the cemetery at night being chased by a ghost with a knife👀🧠
And once they are in a state of high emotion, the next phase begins.
*After watching several intense videos, children are often in a high-dopamine state - excited, engaged and glued to the screen.*🧐🧐
Suddenly new videos appear:
• influencers unboxing toys💵🧨
• influencers showing cool gadgets for school🧨💸
• gaming gear and merchandise🧨💸
• “must-have” collectables🧨💸
• Sephora makeup for tweens🧨💸
When children are highly stimulated and aroused by fear, excitement or a sense of not quite matching up, they’re far more likely to want what they see immediately.
*And because kids often watch alone, parents may never realise why their child suddenly becomes obsessed with certain brands - whether it’s just the right peanut butter for a school sandwich or expensive tween products like R500 bottles of Sol de Janeiro.*💣💲
*What should I do?*
_Three Simple Sentences to Explain Influencers (Ages 4–11)_
1. “ *Some people make videos for fun. 🟦 2. "Some make them as their job".* 🟦
3." *When it’s their job, companies sometimes pay them to show products which means they might be trying to sell you something you don’t really want or need. I know you are smarter than that, let’s try catch them out before they catch us* ” 🟦
*What should I say: Conversation Starters*
Instead of asking “What are you watching?”, try:
• “Tell me about something cool you saw on YouTube today. Did you see anything weird?” I want you to come to me and show those videos when you see them. (this is your cue as a parent to manage their channels better -see tips below)
• “Have you ever seen your favourite character get punished or hurt in a video -was that really scary to watch or were you totally in it?”
• “Have you ever noticed how someone tries to sell you something right after a really exciting or scary video?”
And then the clincher: turn it into a game:
•
“ *Next time you see something strange, watch what video comes next. Let’s see if someone tries to sell us something!* ”💎💎
*Kids often love the idea that they’re smarter than the trick.*
*Practical Steps for Parents to avoid mindless scrolling YouTube for Kids*
If you want to turn off YouTube Shorts, there isn’t a single button to completely remove them, but you can seriously reduce or block them. On YouTube, you can
- *Tap the three dots on any Short and choose “Not interested”* repeatedly, which helps train the app to show fewer Shorts.
- If you’re using parental controls through Google Family Link, you can *set Shorts viewing time to zero for supervised accounts.*
- Another option is to *turn off autoplay* and use browser extensions (on a computer) that hide Shorts entirely. It’s not perfect, but doing this consistently makes Shorts disappear from your feed most of the time.
In short:
✅ Turn off Autoplay
✅ On Google Family Link, you can set Shorts viewing time to zero
✅ Turn off Search for younger children
✅ Use Approved Content Only mode on YouTube Kids and curate exactly which channels you allow your child to watch on YouTube for Kids.
✅ Check their watch history weekly
✅ Keep screens in shared family spaces
The Bottom Line
YouTube can be an incredible place for learning and creativity.
But it’s also powered by algorithms and advertising - not childhood development. I *n fact, these YouTube Shorts have a profound effect on our children’s development (check out our blog to understand just how YouTube Shorts are affecting our children’s minds, their ability to socialise, learn and connect with us and their friends on a day to day basis* (https://klikd.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=efae6a731430fbf0fe0002585&id=d610f46121&e=ece5a48b04)
So when your child searches for something as innocent as “cute kitty,” remember:
*The internet doesn’t always stay as harmless as the search.*
And the most powerful parental control isn’t an app.
It’s your awareness - and helping your child build theirs.
Stay connected
