Senior Preparatory Weekly Memo
9 May 2025
9 May 2025
Dear Parents
It has been another exciting week at the Senior Prep as we have had our first full five day week this quarter! This week we started with our first assessments. Reminder that you can find all the details of assessments for the upcoming weeks on the academics tab of the site.
Our big news this week is that Madagascar Jr tickets go on sale TODAY on Quicket. Make sure that you don't miss out. We expect tickets to sell out quickly as everyone is involved! Madagascar fever has certainly hit us!
Parklands College Preparatory Faculty presents DreamWorks Madagascar – A Musical Adventure JR.
DreamWorks Madagascar – A Musical Adventure JR. features original music and lyrics by George Noriega and Joel Someillan, and book by Kevin Del Aguila.
As the show opens, we learn that Marty the zebra may be celebrating his tenth birthday at the Central Park Zoo with his friends Alex the lion, Gloria the hippo, and Melman the giraffe, yet he longs to experience life outside of the zoo’s walls. When Marty eventually escapes, his animal friends from the zoo pursue him into New York City. After reuniting, the animals are chased by the police, and ultimately felled by tranquilliser darts. They awake, trapped in crates, on a ship, which, through a series of events, is thrown off course. Upon reaching land, the animals discover they have been shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar. Ultimately, it is only in being so lost that they can begin to discover where they really belong.
Every Grade 4 - 6 learner as well as every Grade R - 3 dancer is getting ready to Move it! We hope to see you join in the fun too! Ticket Sales are now open! Book here via Quicket.
Informal Assessments
Our learners are in the process of completing various informal assessments, which are integrated into the daily class activities throughout the quarter. All informal assessments are completed at school and no studying is required.
Formal Assessments
A reminder to click on the specific grade assessment calendars on the academic tab to see your child's formal assessment schedule and study details. The study details are posted at least two weeks before the assessment. Please check calendars on a regular basis to stay updated.
Please note that a doctor's certificate is required if a learner is absent for a formal assessment. Please contact the Principal (pmayers@parklands.co.za) or Head of Academics (ldrawbridge@parklands.co.za) to ask for permission for your child to be absent for any other reason.
As we returned from mid-term break Mrs Buckle spoke to us about S.M.A.R.T. Goals for SUCCESS in our assembly. She encouraged each of our learners to set some smart goals as we head into our assessment season. Remember smart goals are not only for academics but every area of our lives! Thank you for your inspiration this week, Mrs Buckle. Let's apply this in the areas of Academics, Sports, Dance, Music and Uniform.
The future requires people who are innovative, humanity-centred, relationship-oriented, compassion-focused, values-driven, globally-conscious and planet-sensitive, in order to guarantee that this generation will become REAL agents of change. The values necessary to sustain life on earth, as humans and environmentalists, are incorporated in five global competencies across our curriculum under our “Growing Minds” banner: Critical Thinkers, Effective Communicators, Purposeful Collaborators, Creative Agents and Responsible Citizens.
In assembly this week we awarded the following learners growing minds shields. Congratulations to each of you.
Responsible Citizen
Effective Communicator
Purposeful Collaborator
This week marked the beginning of our Quarter 2 assessments and our learners stepped up with focus, determination and plenty of creativity!
Languages in the Limelight
In Afrikaans, learners let their imaginations shine through in their creative writing assessment, where they designed and wrote their own invitations. In isiXhosa, our learners explored communication in a practical and engaging way by writing their own dialogues. This week’s English creative writing task invited learners to dig deep and express themselves through a personal diary entry. They chose between two thought-provoking prompts linked to themes from our novel, but were encouraged to reflect on their own real-life experiences. The result? Honest, heartfelt entries that revealed emotion, insight, and thoughtful connections to the world around them. So proud of their courage and voice!
Smart City - Hydropower and Piezoelectric Sensor System Generating Electricity
Ruben and Callums Science Expo project presents an innovative approach to sustainable energy by combining two renewable energy sources—hydropower and piezoelectric technology. Their project, Smart City - Hydropower and Piezoelectric Sensor System Generating Electricity, explores how the movement of water and vibrations from everyday urban activity can work together to generate clean electricity. By testing the efficiency and compatibility of these systems, Ruben and Callum aim to develop a smart, eco-friendly energy solution that reduces pollution and supports the power needs of future cities.
We are incredibly proud of our young scientists—Sophia DCS, Sophia J, Oluwatobi, Tshegofatso, Alyssa, Karis, Munya, Lea, Casey-Lee, Callum, Ruben, Ada, Ted Zihe, Mveloyokuhle, Lucas, Leo, Lily, Micheala, Christiano, and Brynn — who have demonstrated remarkable curiosity and innovation in their projects. As they prepare to present their ideas at the Eskom District Science Expo on 17 May 2025, we acknowledge the countless hours of research, experimentation, and preparation they have invested.
This opportunity not only highlights their passion for science but also inspires others to think creatively about real-world challenges. Best of luck to all participants—your hard work and enthusiasm are truly commendable!
This week, the start of assessments launched with great energy as our Grade 5s put their study skills into action! Thanks to all the preparation during our PSW lessons, learners are feeling focused and ready to tackle their tasks with confidence.
Our space exploration continued as we ventured into the world of space mining! Learners conducted class research to discover what kinds of mining are possible beyond Earth—and their curiosity is truly out of this world.
Our school is alive with the sounds of Madagascar! In Music and Drama the excitement is growing as learners can’t wait to bring their characters to life and share their hard work on stage.
In History, learners are using their creative and digital skills to put together an engaging presentation on the first farmers in Southern Africa to showcase their understanding of this fascinating topic.
It’s been a dynamic and productive week full of enthusiasm, imagination, and growth!
After a refreshing week-long break, the Grade 4s returned to school full of energy and enthusiasm.
In their language lessons they jumped straight back into their learning, pouring creativity into their English diary entries and confidently crafting dialogues in Afrikaans. In Maths, they have started to tackle bigger numbers with determination, mastering double digit by double digit multiplication like pros!
Excitement was in the air as the Grade 4s blasted off into their new class reader this week. Thabo the Space Dude! How wonderful to read a fun and exciting story written by a South African author!
With assessments on the horizon, they've already begun their preparations, showing focus and responsibility. It’s been a lively and productive return to the classroom, with plenty of fun and learning along the way! Well done Grade 4s!
Our robotics teams had an incredible time visiting the FIRST® LEGO® League Open Africa Championship at the CTICC!
They met teams from around the world, explored impressive engineering solutions for mat challenges, listened to inspiring innovation presentations, played international games, and even danced the Macarena!
What an exciting day of learning, sharing, and global fun! 💡🎮💃🌟

This quarter we are collecting instant oats, cup of soups and instant noodles. Please add these to your shopping list for next time you go shopping so we can continue to support those less fortunate than us. Items can be brought to your child's home room class.
Welcome back, Senior Prep families!
We’ve wasted no time jumping straight back into the sporting action.
Our U10–U12 Netballers hit the ground running with two thrilling rounds of fixtures against Milnerton and Blouberg Ridge. From sharp passes to determined defending and goal-scoring flair, our girls displayed fantastic effort and teamwork throughout - setting a strong tone for the rest of the term.
Meanwhile, our U11 Football boys took on Seamount in their first fixture of the quarter. With grit and growing confidence, the boys gave a spirited performance that promises exciting things to come on the soccer field.
Training resumed from day one, and the dedication and focus from our athletes has been clear to see. With a jam-packed schedule of upcoming festivals, fixtures, and Friday sport, Quarter 2 is shaping up to be a dynamic and action-filled term.
We’re especially excited for two back-to-back festivals happening this weekend and the next—an excellent opportunity for our learners to showcase their talent, teamwork, and growth against a range of competitive schools.
We’re proud of the way our learners have returned - energised, committed, and ready to give it their all. Let’s keep this momentum going and make the most of every opportunity ahead.
From the very first spark of sunrise on Thursday, 24 April 2025, the energy was undeniable - ten Grade 6 girls, bags packed, jerseys ready, and music playing, set off on what would become an unforgettable U12 Netball Tour to beautiful Knysna. What followed was four action-packed days of netball, adventure, and unshakable team spirit.
Coach Nadine summed it up perfectly:
“The journey to Knysna kicked off with what can only be described as the ultimate road trip: loud, full of secrets (that stay on tour!), and buzzing with anticipation!”
The tour started with an awe-inspiring visit to the Knysna Elephant Park, where the team connected with gentle giants and the natural beauty around them. Later that evening, a lively build-a-burger dinner brought teams together from across the country - an early sign of the new friendships and strong spirit that would define the tour.
Over the next few days, the team faced 11 matches against some of South Africa’s top primary netball schools - Collegiate Girls, Sunridge Primary, Laerskool Lorraine, Parsons Hill, Woodridge Prep, Knysna Primary, Reddam Constantia and Durbanville.
From narrow losses to dominant wins, the Parklands girls gave their absolute all, recording 7 victories and showing off impressive teamwork and growth. A highlight? The clash against Laerskool Lorraine, described by Mr Jared Margetts as:
“The best netball game I’ve ever seen from Parklands College Prep.”
Although narrowly edged out 12–9, the grit and resilience on display stole the show.
The team also went unbeaten on both Saturday and Sunday, showcasing their mental toughness, tactical growth, and unified drive to perform at their best - even with tired legs and sore muscles.
While netball was the focus, the trip was equally about connection and discovery. Whether it was a well-earned pizza night, speedboat rides through the Knysna Heads, or drama-filled shrieks echoing over the water, every moment brought the team closer together. Coach Nadine joked that the screams could earn them a spot in Parklands’ next theatre production!
Sunday marked the final day of action, with two final matches completed through sheer determination and heart. The girls gave it everything, rounding off the tour with a sense of pride and memories they’ll never forget.
We extend a massive thank you to our dedicated parent and family community. Your presence, whether cheering on the sidelines in rain or sunshine, made all the difference. The support helped fuel our girls through every high and every challenge.
To our generous sponsors, thank you for making this experience even more memorable! The hoodies, warm-up T-shirts, travel mugs, and coffee mugs brought the team together in true Parkie style - you’ve helped create a lasting sense of unity and pride.
Knysna 2025 was more than a tour - it was a celebration of what it means to be a Parklands College Prep athlete: passionate, resilient, courageous, and united. As Coach Nadine put it: “Knysna was more than just netball—it was a celebration of teamwork, courage, laughter, and growing together.”
We know these stories will live on in whispered tour secrets, shared giggles, and proud retellings for years to come.
Well done, girls. We are so proud of you!
Jared Margetts & Coach Nadine.

We were thrilled to offer our Grade 4 - 6 dancers specialised coaching in expression and performance for their Eisteddfod Character solos with none other than our very own Mrs Buckle. Her wealth of experience and renowned expertise provided an invaluable opportunity for these young dancers to develop their artistry.
Our Own Choice dancers were equally privileged to receive coaching from the distinguished Professor Elizabeth Triegaardt — a towering figure in the South African ballet world. A Fellow of the Royal Academy of Dance, Professor Triegaardt is closely affiliated with the Cape Junior Ballet Company and is a former principal dancer of CAPAB Ballet. She also served as CEO of Cape Town City Ballet and was the long-standing head of the UCT Dance Department having introduced the first Degree in Dance in South Africa. Having such a remarkable mentor guide our dancers is truly an honour and a memorable milestone in their training journey.
We are collecting newspapers to use in Art and Makerspace. We still welcome bottle tops, off cuts, stockings, boxes, cans, buttons and more to make Madagascar Jr props and costumes. Please send to school to reuse and recycle.
Parklands College is planning a Cultural Tour to Paris in September 2026 for our current Grade 5, 6 & 7 learners.
Should you be interested in your child participating in the tour, or require further information, please email Mme A Bailly at abailly@parklands.co.za. A truly memorable cultural experience awaits!
On 25 April our Grade 4 Book Club learners - Munashe, Mntungwa, Bukhosi, Tiana, Amarachi, Skyleigh and Yoriola - closed the week before mid-term break with an exciting Scavenger Hunt challenge! Competing as Team Blue and Team Orange, they activated their investigative skills based on our library books, trying to find clues that lead them to their final destination! Please help us by ensuring that your child's bag and belongings are labelled. We have many items that have found themselves in lost property but some labelled items have been taken home and not returned. Please check your child's items and if your child has mistakenly taken an item belonging to someone else, kindly return it to reception so we can return it to the right child.
We have installed new lockers in the changing rooms that are big enough to store sports kit. Your child is encouraged to make use of these lockers on the day that they have sports kit that is not able to fit into their own locker. Note that an additional lock is required that can be purchased from reception for a cost of R85. It is important that these lockers are emptied at the end of the day and locks are removed so that someone else can use them for their sports kit on the next day.
Thank you to our 5P learners who delivered many unclaimed items that that had names on them that were found in our lost property! Now that is kindness in action!
Please join me in wishing Coach Jared a very happy birthday for next week Tuesday 13 May! We also wish our Prep ICT Manager, Christian, a happy birthday for Monday 12 May.
To all the incredible mothers, grandmothers, mother figures, and caregivers in our school community, we celebrate and thank you for the love, strength, and care you show each day. Wishing you a joyful and well-deserved Mother’s Day filled with appreciation and special moments.
