Senior Preparatory Weekly Memo

We celebrated our 46th birthday on Wednesday, 11 March and on this day in 1980, Lorraine Roth, opened the doors of Christopher Robin Pre-Primary School to the residents of Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard. The quality of education provided brought about a well–patronised and respected establishment, which offered care and early learning to young children, aged from six months to six years.
The reputation and quality of the school continued to grow and numerous requests by parents, for the Pre-Primary to offer formal education, began. Encouraged by the staunch support of parents we were prompted to search for land to grow the school’s academic offering. As a result of a thorough research process, the Western Seaboard was identified as a potential major growth area. This was further supported by growth and population statistics from the City of Cape Town’s Planning Department. The construction of Parklands College commenced in 1998 in the new suburb of Parklands and in July of the same year, proudly opened the doors of the new Campus in Raats Drive, to 32 learners.
The College was built in phases, in order to accommodate the growth in learner numbers. The window period provided during the construction phases enabled the College to acquire additional land for sports and future developments. Parklands College currently operates from three sites, on approximately twenty-six and a half hectares of land. The growth of the College and Pre-Primary required careful strategic planning, and a decision to develop a new campus for the existing Secondary Faculty was formalised by the Board in February 2010. Parklands College, at 1 College Avenue, opened its doors in January 2012.
The College continues to grow as a result of the outstanding education and foundation our learners receive in our Pre-Primary and we are proud of what has been made available, in order to enrich their academic, cultural and sporting interests. We look forward to providing many more years of outstanding innovative education, beginning in the early years. The success could not have been achieved without the outstanding support we have received from our parents.

Our learners have been superstars despite the heat. While sport has had to take a back seat, learning in the classroom has continued. The icecreams were certainly a highlight on Wednesday!
KLIKD in your Pocket "The big bosses at Meta, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp are all in Court"
If you missed the message this week, click the arrow on the right to expand...
*TRENDING NOW: The big bosses at Meta, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp are all in Court!*
There’s a reason our kids can’t lift their heads from a YouTube fix, an Insta feed, or a TikTok ‘for you’ page. If your child’s neck is permanently stuck at a lowered 45 degree angle, if they don’t hear you when you call them to dinner – it isn’t because of sudden onset deafness!!💥🤯
Right now the big bosses of social media are on trial, basically for creating addicted kids.
Yes, at last, the creators of YouTube, Tik Tok, Instagram, FaceBook, WhatApp - all our kids favourite platforms, are in court… and the case raises a question we as parents have quietly wondered about for years: *Do social media companies really understand the impact their platforms have on our children… and if they do, why aren’t they doing something about it?!*
The people bringing the case argue that the creators know, knew and have known along that certain features on their platforms can harm our kids mental health. 🟥😳🧨🤯*Read that again!! Yup, they say research conducted INSIDE of these companies showed links between heavy social media use and problems such as anxiety, low self-esteem and body-image issues.*
Despite this, critics say the companies continued using design features that keep young people scrolling, watching and engaging for longer and longer periods. Uhhh -we see that.
*So why are these apps are so hard to put down?!*
Part of the concern lies in how social media platforms are built from the get go.
Many of the features we now take for granted are actually designed to capture and hold our kids’ attention. These include:
• Endless scrolling feeds
• Autoplay videos
• Constant notifications
• Emotionally charged or sensational content
Together, these create an experience that can make it very difficult to stop and log off.
These design elements are sometimes referred to as “addictive features”, because they encourage users to keep coming back even when the content they’re seeing may make them feel worried, upset, pressured, or not good enough.
For teenagers, whose brains are still developing and who are naturally more sensitive to social feedback and comparison, these environments can be especially powerful in creating little addicts.
*Their comeback*
Meta along with all the other creators of addictive platforms strongly dispute these claims.
The companies are saying they work hard to keep users safe and argues that social media can also provide important benefits, such as helping young people connect with friends, express themselves and build communities.
Meta, for example maintains that it has introduced tools, safety features and parental controls aimed at protecting younger users.
The trial will help decide whether the company did enough to protect teenagers or whether it should have changed its platforms sooner.
*Okay this is above our paygrade so why does this matter for parents?*
Regardless of the legal outcome, the case highlights something important:
*These platforms are not neutral. They are carefully designed systems competing for attention.*
For parents and educators, this moment creates a valuable opportunity to talk with young people about:
• How apps are designed to hold attention
• How online content can affect our emotions
• Who should be responsible for protecting young people online
Helping children understand how these systems work is one of the most powerful ways to build digital resilience.
*How can I get this across to my child? Some conversation starters to have at home*
1.Do you think social media companies really care about your mental health, or are they mainly focused on making money? Why do you think that?
2.What features on apps make it hard for you to stop scrolling or watching?
Have you noticed things like autoplay, endless feeds or constant notifications or are they almost invisible to you?
3.Have you ever seen posts, news or ads online that made you feel worried, upset or not good enough? Why do you think those kinds of posts get so much attention?
4.If a company knows its app might harm young people, is it responsible to change things?
5.In your view who should help protect kids online? The companies that build the apps, us parents, your school, the governments, or should you be left to decide for yourself? Why?
6.If you were in charge of a social media company, what one rule or feature would you introduce to make it healthier for people your age?

Please enable notifications on the app so you can receive important push notifications from the school.
The future requires people who are innovative, humanity-centred, relationship-oriented, compassion-focused, values-driven, globally-conscious and planet-sensitive, in order to guarantee that this generation will become REAL agents of change. The values necessary to sustain life on earth, as humans and environmentalists, are incorporated in five global competencies across our curriculum under our “Growing Minds” banner: Critical Thinkers, Effective Communicators, Purposeful Collaborators, Creative Agents and Responsible Citizens.
In assembly this week, we awarded the following learners with Growing Minds Shield. Congratulations to each of them.
Peyton receives the Purposeful Collaborator trophy for her outstanding hospitality and kindness towards others. When a visitor joined our class, Peyton made a special effort to ensure he felt welcomed and included. Noticing him alone during break time, she thoughtfully connected him with a group of learners, helping him form new friendships. Her initiative, empathy, and leadership truly reflect the spirit of our class and school. (Mr Robyn)
Junior receives the Effective Communicator trophy for presenting his PSW presentation with confidence and that 'extra something' that only a natural-born communicator has. (Ms Prinsloo)
Sandria receives Responsible Citizen trophy for her hard work, from organising the library books to the way she noticed a classmate sitting alone at break and chose to keep her company, you have shown such incredible heart. Thank you for being so responsible and for always being a kind, inclusive friend.
Taking Afrikaans Outside 🌿📱
This week, our Afrikaans lesson escaped the four walls of the classroom as learners headed outdoors to immerse themselves in nature. By integrating technology with the environment, learners used their iPads to explore interactive stories set against the backdrop of the great outdoors. This fresh-air approach turned grammar into an adventure; while engaging with the narratives, learners identified and categorised werkwoorde (verbs), selfstandige naamwoorde (nouns), and practised their lettergrepe (syllables) using digital tools. It was a wonderful way to see them apply their language skills in a real-world context, proving t
Adventure Awaits!
The countdown is officially on! We are getting so excited for our upcoming trip to Genesis Camp at Ruigtevlei Farm. It’s going to be an unforgettable three days of fresh air, team building and adventure.
To make sure everything runs smoothly, here is the game plan for our departure and return:
When we leave: Wednesday, 18 March at 07:30 sharp. Campers to please meet on the grass area by the hall. (Don’t forget those early morning smiles!)
When we return: Friday, 20 March at 12:00. Please note that collection is at 12:00 and all learners will head home for a well-deserved rest after we arrive.
Who’s coming along: Ms. Prinsloo, Ms. Hodges, Ms. Blewitt, and Mr. Delport.
As you might expect with a true camping experience, cellular signal at the site is very limited. While this is great for getting our learners off their screens and into nature, it does mean we won't be as "online" as usual!
In case of emergency: Please contact the School Office directly or Camp Genesis Office: 064-231-2129.
Email: You can also reach Ms Prinsloo at sprinsloo@parklands.co.za, but please keep in mind that there is only limited connectivity.
We can’t wait to get on the bus and start this journey with our Grade 6 learners. Let’s make it a trip to remember!
Grade 6 Leadership Camp 2026
Dates: Wednesday, 18 March – Friday, 20 March 2026
Location: Genesis Camp, Porterville (visit www.campgenesis.co.za)
This week in Maths, we built 3D shapes out of nets, which was a great hands-on way to see how flat patterns fold into cubes, pyramids and more. In English, we explored the idea that people carry both good and bad traits - and that change is always possible. Afrikaans was a highlight, with Meneer Robyn treating our Grade 5s to a masterclass in verlede tyd. History introduced us to Venn diagrams as a tool for comparing and organising information, while in Geography we looked at the physical features of Africa, from its mountain ranges and rivers to its deserts and coastlines. PSW gave us space to talk about bullying — what it looks like, why it matters, and why it's so important to tell a trusted adult.
It has been another busy and engaging week in Grade 4!
In Afrikaans, learners began exploring instructions, with a special focus on recipe writing. We started by looking at a recipe and answering questions about it to understand how instructions are written. Learners have now begun writing their own recipes for a special sandwich, thinking carefully about the ingredients they would need and the steps someone would follow to make it. It has been great to see their creativity (and some very tasty sounding sandwiches! 🥪).
In Mathematics, we have dived into the world of data handling. Learners have been discovering different ways to organise and display information, including bar graphs, pictographs and tally graphs. They have been learning how to read and interpret these graphs to understand what the data is telling us. 📊
In Life Skills, we are continuing our discussions about strengths and weaknesses. Learners have been reflecting on what they feel they are good at, as well as areas where they would like to grow and improve. These conversations have encouraged learners to think about themselves in a positive way and to understand that everyone has different strengths and areas to develop.

It has been another buzzing week in the Senior Prep Robotics lab! It is such a joy to see our learners so engaged, working together to solve problems and bring their big ideas to life.
Our Grade 6 learners were pushed to think like true engineers this week. They took on a massive "out of the box" challenge: designing a rollercoaster bridge that had to span the gap across three desks! This wasn't just about building; it was about understanding structural integrity and momentum. Watching them iterate on their designs to ensure a smooth "ride" across the divide was a masterclass in persistence and clever thinking.
A huge congratulations to our Grade 5s who have officially completed their digital "twin" of Parklands College in Minecraft Education. This wasn't just a manual build; the learners used the coding option to automate parts of the construction. Seeing them translate our real-world campus into a digital masterpiece using code has been a massive highlight for the quarter.
There was a wave of excitement in Grade 4 as we officially introduced the Spike Prime robotics kits! This is a big step up for our learners as they begin working with more advanced sensors and motors. They handled the transition beautifully, showing great curiosity as they explored the new hardware they’ll be using to build and program throughout the year.
In our 1st Robotics co-curricular, we shifted our focus to the physics of motion. The learners began constructing gravity cars, diving deep into the importance of the driving base and stability. By experimenting with weight distribution and centre of gravity, they are discovering exactly what it takes to keep a vehicle balanced and fast without the help of a motor!
ADVENTURES ON TRAINS
It is quite likely that many of our parents and grandparents have interesting stories to tell about memorable train journeys. This week we showcased this wonderful mode of transport by introducing a great series to our readers.
Bestselling authors M.G. Leonard and Sam Sedgman, who both love the magic of trains, joined forces to produce a thrilling, multi award-winning mystery series, titled Adventures on Trains. Eleven-year-old Harrison Beck (Hal) joins his uncle Nat who is a travel writer, on journeys on some of the world’s most famous trains. Each journey introduces a thrilling mystery, full of deception, puzzles and clues to solve.
This is rather exciting travelling as the readers not only learn about trains, but visit fascinating places all over the world. They even stop over in South Africa on their way to the Victoria Falls!
Currently there are six books in the series, which can be read in any order, and will give pleasure at any age, 7 - 70+.
INTERNATIONAL LIT QUIZ
Once a year we have the pleasure of participating in a competition which is a real treat for our avid readers. Initiated by Wayne Mills, a lecturer in children’s literature in Auckland, the competition has grown into a worldwide event, with world finals in July every year. We always enter two teams from Grade 6 and Grade 7, and on Thursday afternoon the teams travelled to The Grove school in Claremont where the regional finals took place. They faced 100 questions in 10 categories and 41 teams from other Cape Town schools, competed for individual and team prizes, learned lots about books and generally had an exhilarating afternoon. Congratulations to Ardni, Kahlia, Nicholas and Tyler on a great team effort. This was their first time participating and they were super proud of achieving a top score in the Pop Culture category.
What a scorcher of a week it has been, with temperatures soaring into the high 30’s! Thankfully, our learners had the perfect way to cool down, enjoying every minute of Swimming during their PE lessons. The pool has certainly been the place to be this week, with learners showing great enthusiasm while continuing to build their swimming confidence and skills.
As we move into the final stretch of Quarter 1, sport continues for a little while longer. Sports training will run until 20 March, while Physical Education lessons will continue until Tuesday, 24 March. We look forward to finishing the quarter strong with continued participation, energy, and enjoyment from our learners. On Wednesday, 25 March all should come in their house colours with their swimming kit (for those taking part in the Gala)
At the same time, we are beginning to turn our attention toward the upcoming Winter Sports Programme. Please note the details below outlining the important information regarding the transition to our winter codes. Note that Summer Paid for Co-curriculars take priority over the Winter Switch Schedule, as there is more than one option to attend a session for each sport.
Thank you to our learners and families for the continued enthusiasm and support shown throughout the summer sports season at Parklands College. We look forward to an exciting finish to the quarter and the start of another fantastic sporting season ahead.
