Senior Preparatory Weekly Memo
6 March 2026
6 March 2026
Above: Lorraine and Werner Roth Above Right: Founding Educators: (Back L-R) J. Booysen, L. Davies, L. Steynberg (Nee Greenway), J. Armstrong, R. Knaggs (Director), G. Douglas, A. Bailly, N. Muller (Front L-R) H. Kreyenbroek, R. van der Merwe, P. O’Brien, L. Ribaudo and L. Torbet. (Highlighted names denote staff who are still with us).
We will be celebrating our 46th birthday on Wednesday, 11 March and on this day in 1980, Lorraine Roth, opened the doors of Christopher Robin Pre-Primary School to the residents of Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard. The quality of education provided brought about a well – patronised and respected establishment, which offered care and early learning to young children, aged from six months to six years.
The reputation and quality of the school continued to grow and numerous requests by parents, for the Pre-Primary to offer formal education began. Encouraged by the staunch support of parents we were prompted to search for land to grow the school’s academic offering. As a result of a thorough research process, the Western Seaboard was identified as a potential major growth area. This was further supported by growth and population statistics from the City of Cape Town’s Planning Department. The construction of Parklands College commenced in 1998 in the new suburb of Parklands and in July of the same year, proudly opened the doors of the new Campus in Raats Drive, to 32 learners.
The College was built in phases, in order to accommodate the growth in learner numbers. The window period provided during the construction phases enabled the College to acquire additional land for sports and future developments. Parklands College currently operates from three sites, on approximately twenty-six and a half hectares of land. The growth of the College and Pre-Primary required careful strategic planning, and a decision to develop a new campus for the existing Secondary Faculty was formalised by the Board in February 2010. Parklands College, at 1 College Avenue, opened its doors in January 2012.
The College continues to grow as a result of the outstanding education and foundation our learners receive in our Pre-Primary and we are proud of what has been made available, in order to enrich their academic, cultural and sporting interests. We look forward to providing many more years of outstanding innovative education, beginning in the early years. The success could not have been achieved without the outstanding support we have received from our parents.
Lorraine Roth

Last week Klikd in Your Pocket posted valuable information on Whatsapp. If you missed it expand the section below to read more:

For many parents, giving a child access to WhatsApp feels practical. It helps with school communication, sports groups, lift clubs, and staying in touch with family.
But WhatsApp is no longer a simple messaging app. It is a powerful social platform owned by Meta, with AI integration, massive group functionality (sometimes hundreds of kids — and adults — in one group), media sharing, and very limited parental controls. 🧐
Before handing over access, here’s what you need to consider.
*1. 🟥 It’s Not “Just a Group Chat” — It’s 150 Kids Watching*
Most children join because “everyone is on it.” But group dynamics are intense — and WhatsApp amplifies them.
*What parents should know:*
• Imagine your child saying something slightly wrong — and 150 classmates seeing it instantly. Messages move fast. Conflict escalates quickly. Screenshots spread faster than playground rumours ever did.
• Exclusion is brutal online. Children are removed from groups without warning. Sometimes entirely new groups are created to exclude one child. That’s hard for adults to navigate — never mind children still developing emotional regulation.
• Group admins control who stays and who goes. One or two children can hold enormous social power — often without understanding the responsibility that comes with it.
• Inappropriate content can appear without warning. Even if your child wouldn’t send it, someone else might. Images, jokes, or voice notes circulate long before anyone considers consequences. (See legal section below.)
*_THE CONVERSATION TO HAVE:_*
Do you know who the group admins are?
What would you do if you were removed?
What would you do if something inappropriate was shared?
---
*2. 🟥 Your Child Can Be Held Legally Responsible — Even If They Didn’t Post It*
In South Africa, your child can be held legally responsible for content shared in a WhatsApp group — even if they didn’t post it.
If they remain in a group where illegal content (racist material, pornography, explicit images) is shared — and do not actively distance themselves (by leaving or objecting) — the law may view them as participating in its publication.
Another serious issue:
By default, WhatsApp automatically saves media to the device gallery unless this setting is switched off. That means inappropriate or explicit images shared in a group may be automatically saved to your child’s phone.
If those images involve minors — even as a “joke” or deepfake — your child could potentially be in possession of child pornography simply because the image saved automatically.
_This is not theoretical. This is legal reality._
*_THE CONVERSATION TO HAVE:_*
• If someone in your group shares something racist, explicit, or illegal — what would you do?
• Do you know that staying in the group can make you legally responsible?
• Would you feel confident saying, “This isn’t okay,” or leaving the group?
• Do you understand that images shared in a group might automatically save to your phone?
• If something inappropriate was saved to your device, would you tell me immediately?
---
*3. 🟥 Your Child’s WhatsApp May Be Wide Open — And You Wouldn’t Even Know*
Many parents assume WhatsApp is “safe” because it isn’t public like Instagram or TikTok. But unless privacy settings are changed, your child’s account may be far more exposed than you realise.
By default, strangers can often:
• See your child’s profile photo
• Add them to group chats without permission
• View their “last seen” status (revealing when they’re online or awake)
• See status updates
• Add them to large groups where you have no idea what’s being shared
All someone needs is your child’s phone number — which becomes easily visible inside large groups.
These settings must be changed before access is given. They are non-negotiable.
*_THE CONVERSATION TO HAVE:_*
What would you do if you were added to a group and didn’t know everyone in it?
---
*4. 🟥 There Is No Such Thing as a “Private Chat”*
If your child wouldn’t be comfortable seeing a message projected on a screen in assembly, they shouldn’t send it.
Children believe chats are temporary and private. They are not.
Screenshots are instant. Messages and voice notes are forwarded. Sometimes children even photograph conversations using a second device.
Deleted does not mean erased.
*_THE CONVERSATION TO HAVE:_*
If this message was shown to the whole school tomorrow, would you still send it?
---
*5. 🟥 Someone Can Pretend to Be Your Child*
In Southern Africa, phone theft is common. When a phone is stolen, it’s not just a device that’s lost — it’s identity.
With access to an unlocked phone, someone can impersonate your child, message classmates or teachers, request money, send harmful content, and damage reputations.
Even locked phones aren’t foolproof. SIM swap fraud allows criminals to hijack a number and re-register WhatsApp on another device.
*Important safeguards:*
• Enable two-step verification with a PIN
• Use biometric locks — on the device and specific WhatsApp chats
• Activate remote tracking
• Teach your child to report theft immediately
*_THE CONVERSATION TO HAVE:_*
If your phone was stolen today, who could pretend to be you?
---
*6. 🟥 Emotional Readiness Matters More Than Age*
The official age requirement is less important than maturity.
Ask yourself:
• Can your child handle exclusion?
• Can they pause before reacting in conflict?
• Do they understand digital footprints?
• Will they tell you if something goes wrong?
• Can they stand up for someone being hurt in a group?
---
*7. 🟥 High-Risk Features Many Parents Don’t Realise Exist*
WhatsApp Channels and Meta AI are built-in features that cannot be fully toggled off. Both carry additional risks for children.
We’ll unpack these in Part 2 of this series.
---
*✅ A Practical Checklist Before Saying Yes*
• Enable two-step verification
• Decide if WhatsApp is truly necessary — or just social pressure
• Review and lock down privacy settings
• Set rules for group participation
• Agree on screen time boundaries
• Discuss what to do if removed from a group
• Talk through phone theft scenarios
• Explain what Meta AI is and how it works
---
*Final Thought: WhatsApp Is a Social Space, Not Just a Tool*
To adults, WhatsApp is convenience.
To children, it is identity, belonging, reputation — and sometimes social survival.
The risks are not only technical. They are emotional, social, and reputational.
Digital access should never be accidental. It should be intentional, guided, and revisited regularly.
At Klikd, we believe digital literacy is as important as reading and writing. If you’re unsure whether your child is ready — or how to secure their device — start the conversation now.
Join our *“Damn! This Device”* workshop:
https://klikd.co.za/mini-workshop/
Because once they’re added to the group, the digital world doesn’t wait. 🤯💥
Stay connected,
*Sarah & Pam*

The future requires people who are innovative, humanity-centred, relationship-oriented, compassion-focused, values-driven, globally-conscious and planet-sensitive, in order to guarantee that this generation will become REAL agents of change. The values necessary to sustain life on earth, as humans and environmentalists, are incorporated in five global competencies across our curriculum under our “Growing Minds” banner: Critical Thinkers, Effective Communicators, Purposeful Collaborators, Creative Agents and Responsible Citizens.
In assembly this week, we awarded the following learners with Growing Minds Shield. Congratulations to each of them.
Purposeful Collaborators
This award goes to Amara and Lela for showing remarkable kindness and teamwork. They have been helping an injured friend by assisting her with carrying her books and making her transitions between classes much easier. Their thoughtful actions and caring spirit are an inspiring example of true collaboration and friendship. (Ms Hodges)
Creative Agent
Mandla receives the Creative Agent trophy for presenting his 'All About Me' PSW project with confidence and a creative spirit that showed us there is truly nobody else like him. (Ms Prinsloo)
Responsible Citizen
Anna-Marie receives the Responsible Citizen award for being the kind of learner who makes teaching a joy. Thank you for always being kind, always considerate, and forever ready to lend a helping hand. (Mrs Holliday)
Partytjietyd in Graad 6! 🎈
This week, our classrooms transformed into a "party planning" headquarters! Our Grade 6s have been busy mastering the art of the Afrikaans invitation. From choosing the perfect theme to nailing the "Vyf V’s" (Wie, Wat, Waar, Wanneer, and RSVP), they’ve proven that learning a language is one big celebration. They even designed a high-energy example for a party to get their creative juices flowing! It was wonderful to see them blending their vocabulary with glitter, colour and a whole lot of personality.
The Silk Road Chronicles!
What a whirlwind of a week it has been in Grade 6! We have officially stepped out of our classroom and travelled back to the 13th century, following in the legendary footsteps of Marco Polo. From the bustling markets of Venice to the grand palaces of Kublai Khan, our explorers have covered some serious ground. We unpacked Marco’s incredible 24-year odyssey along the Silk Road, mapping his journey and discovering how a teenager from Italy became a trusted advisor to the Emperor of China. Learners also put their timeline skills to the test, visually capturing the sheer scale and duration of his travels. To top it all off, the classroom is buzzing with excitement as we prepare for next week’s Great Debate: was Marco Polo truly a hero, or simply a master storyteller with a vivid imagination? The curiosity, critical thinking, and enthusiasm have been absolutely wonderful to see!
☀️ S'mores Powered by the Sun! 🍫
Our Grade 6 scientists took the "lab" outdoors this week to explore the power of renewable energy. Using nothing but cardboard, foil and a bit of engineering, they successfully built functional solar ovens! It wasn’t just about the treats (though the melted chocolate was a major win); it was a hands-on masterclass in thermodynamics.
Reflection:
Learners used aluminum foil to angle incoming sunlight directly into the box, concentrating the rays.
The Greenhouse Effect:
Using plastic wrap to create a seal, they trapped thermal energy inside, watching the internal temperatures climb.
Conduction & Absorption:
Black base plates helped absorb the heat, while the heat transferred directly into our marshmallows and chocolate.
The Results?
Sticky fingers, bright smiles and a genuine understanding of how we can harness the sun's power for everyday tasks. Who knew science could taste this good?
Grade 6 Leadership Camp 2026
Dates: Wednesday, 18 March – Friday, 20 March 2026
Location: Genesis Camp, Porterville (visit www.campgenesis.co.za)
What a week of adventure and learning it has been! Our mathematicians became real-life detectives, hunting for angles hidden all around our school, while our English learners soaked up their setwork in the gorgeous school gardens, discovering the powerful message that there are no truly "bad" people - only bad behaviours, and that friendship, empathy, and belief in oneself can change everything.
Afrikaans taal revision got a serious glow-up with a school-wide QR code scavenger hunt, and our isiXhosa learners channelled their inner chefs, mastering the art of recipe writing.
History took us on a journey to explore the breathtaking rock paintings of the Southern African Hunter-Gatherers, and in Geography we mapped out our neighbouring countries and the borders that connect and divide us.
To top it all off, 5P absolutely stole the show at assembly with a fantastical Dr Seuss birthday celebration. A huge well done to our three Grade 5 pianists whose beautiful performances left us all in awe!
Reminder: Next week we head out for our Q1 outing. Please see the details in the outing response form
It has been a busy and exciting time in Grade 4! Learners have been writing their first set of assessments and we are proud of the focus and effort they have been showing as they take on this new Grade 4 challenge. ✏️📚
In Mathematics, we have begun learning how to tell analogue time. Learners have been practising reading clocks and figuring out what the hour and minute hands are telling us. There have been lots of “aha!” moments as they work out the time. ⏰
In Geography, things got a little mysterious! Learners worked in groups and were given a mysterious set of directions that led them to different locations around the school. They had to carefully follow the clues and use their knowledge of directions to navigate their way around campus. The teamwork, excitement, and problem-solving made it feel like a real adventure! 🌍
In Afrikaans, learners dove into paragraph writing. They practised describing themselves as well as a member of their family, using the vocabulary and sentence structures we have been learning in class. It was wonderful to see their creativity and personal stories come through in their writing. ✍️
Formal and Informal Assessments
Formal and informal assessments in the Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 – 6) take place regularly throughout the quarter after certain concepts or skills have been taught.
Informal assessments are usually integrated into daily class activities at any point during the quarter. Learners must apply their knowledge and skills learnt in various ways, from oral presentations to written paragraphs that explain their understanding of a concept to research projects that enhance their understanding of a specific topic. All informal assessments are completed at school and no studying is required.
Formal assessments take place on a specific date in the quarter after a larger section of content has been taught. Studying is required for these assessments and it is recommended that a quiet space is set up at home where your child is able to prepare for these assessments. Teachers also do revision in class with the learners before each formal assessment.
The Education Department monitors learner absenteeism, and the only valid reasons endorsed by the Education Department are as follows:
Learners may only miss an assessment (examination) supported by documentary evidence for the following reasons:
- Illness (must be supported by a valid medical doctor's certificate)
- Family bereavement (letter required)
- Representing the country or province in a sporting or cultural event (official letter required)
All absences for these reasons must be accompanied by the appropriate documentary evidence as indicated above.
Your cooperation in maintaining regular attendance helps us provide the best possible education for your child.
Please see the Grade 4 - 6 Assessment schedules for Quarter 1 below.
Please visit that Academics Tab for the Google Assessment Calendars for each grade. Details of work to study is linked in the description of each calendar entry and is loaded two weeks prior to each formal assessment.
Look for the Add to your Calendar Link in each of the Assessment Calendars to add to your own calendar so that you always get the up to date information on the nature and content of each assessment. During Science Club, learners explored the different forces acting on a helicopter, including gravity, lift, and air resistance. They then designed and built their own paper helicopters and tested how they flew.
Learners were introduced to the concept of variables and investigated how changing one factor could affect the results. They experimented by using different propeller designs, adding extra weight, and increasing the number of propellers to observe how these changes influenced the helicopter’s flight.
This hands-on investigation encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and an understanding of how scientific testing works. 🚁🔬📄
On Monday we paid tribute to a beloved author whose children’s books feature in most children’s lives when learning to read. Theodor Seuss Geisel was a children’s author, illustrator and political cartoonist who wrote more than 60 of the most popular books of all time.
After the Second World War, he focused on books that would encourage children to read. Children’s books were boring and uninspiring, and he set out to change things. In came wacky characters, amazing new words, a limited vocabulary and lots of rhyme and repetition which made reading a breeze. As the saying goes, the rest is history. Thank you for the magic, Dr. Seuss.
FUN FACT: Did you know that Dr Seuss created the word “nerd”?
Some sound advice for living from the master:
📙 You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax. All you need is a book.
📙 Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are seeds. You can grow flowers, or you can grow weeds.
📙 Step with care and great tact. And remember that life’s a great balancing act!
📙 You’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut!
📙 It is not hard to make decisions once you know what your values are.
📙 I like nonsense. It wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living.
📙 You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose!
📙 The more that you read, the more you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go!

Please be aware that learners under the age of 13 may NOT use UBER without an adult. We are aware that UBER has a teen service; however, this is for 13 - 17 year olds only, and they may NOT use the service with any child under the age of 13 years. Any child under 13 years old may only use an UBER with an 18 year old and above.
Please ensure that learners arrive on time for the start of the academic day. Parents are welcome to drop their children off between 07:30 and 07:45 and are requested to use the Drop and Go Zone on the SP Campus in Wood Drive.
Parents may pull into the yellow zone for learners to get out and walk into school on their own. Please do not park or leave your car in the Drop and Go Zone.
All learners must be clocked in and ready for the day before this 07:45. Learners who attend early morning activities must clock-in before attending their session in order to avoid being recorded as 'Late Arrival' on the biometric system.
Aftercare is a combined group of Grade 4-6 learners. Parents, please inform the College via email should you wish to make use of our aftercare facility. Learners may wear their Parklands College sports uniform. Learners attending Aftercare will be escorted to the venue. Parents who wish to make use of our aftercare facilities must please inform us via e-mail.
School is LOCKED promptly at 16h45 daily. Please assist us by ensuring that your child is collected on time allowing our dedicated staff to return home to their own families. A late collection fee of R250 per half-hour (or part thereof) will apply for children collected from aftercare after 17h00.
For safety reasons no learners are permitted to wait outside the College gates at any time.
Parents entering our campus are required to have a car identification sticker, which can be collected from reception. By displaying the sticker on your car, you will gain easy access to the College premises. Vehicles that do not have a sticker will be scanned. ‘At the Gate’ Access Solution is used by the College and involves drivers' and car license discs being scanned. This information is stored on a secure database off-site for future reference should the need arise. Pedestrians are also required to produce identification.
We request, for the safety of our learners, that parents and visitors who are on our campus during academic time also sign in at reception and receive a visitors badge. The badge must be returned to reception before leaving campus.
