PARKLANDS COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH KLIKD FOR A DIGITAL SAFETY SOLUTION
Parenting in the digital age presents unique challenges. Balancing your child’s need for online interaction with the responsibility of keeping them safe can feel overwhelming. Excluding your child from the digital world might seem isolating, yet providing them with unrestricted access to smart devices without guidance can pose serious risks.
It is vital to equip our children with the skills they need to navigate the digital world confidently, responsibly, and safely. That’s why we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Klikd, South Africa’s leading digital safety and citizenship company. We will be rolling out Klikd’s Digital Citizenship Programme for Schools for Grades 4-6.
About Klikd
Klikd was founded by clinical psychologist Pam Tudin and social media lawyer Sarah Hoffman, combining their expertise to offer an innovative approach to cyber safety and digital citizenship education.
In today’s world, knowing how to handle challenges such as cyberbullying, gaming addiction, inappropriate content, online predators, managing one’s digital footprint and Artificial Intelligence - is no longer optional -it's essential. These aren’t skills that can be taught in a single school talk but require continuous conversations and guidance, reinforced at school and at home.
The Klikd Digital Citizenship Programme for Schools
Through our partnership with Klikd, we will offer a carefully curated programme that provides learners with the tools they need to thrive in the online world. Importantly, it also empowers you, as parents, with weekly practical resources and strategies to support your child on this journey.
The future requires people who are innovative, humanity-centred, relationship-oriented, compassion-focused, values-driven, globally-conscious and planet-sensitive, in order to guarantee that this generation will become REAL agents of change. The values necessary to sustain life on earth, as humans and environmentalists, are incorporated in five global competencies across our curriculum under our “Growing Minds” banner: Critical Thinkers, Effective Communicators, Purposeful Collaborators, Creative Agents and Responsible Citizens.
In assembly this week, we awarded the following learners with Growing Minds Shields. Congratulations to each of you and well done on being nominated for this award.
Ayomide
Always offering to help her teachers and friends and not being afraid to ask for help when needed. (Mrs Holliday)
Cooper
A creative agent doesn’t just imagine - they bring positive energy that inspires others to think differently. Thank you Cooper for coming to school every day with a positive attitude and making everyone around you smile. (Ms Hodges)
The energy in our Grade 6 classrooms has been nothing short of inspiring this week!
🎵 Music: The Science of Soundtracks
This week, our young musicians turned into researchers as we explored the fascinating relationship between music and cognitive focus. We tackled the age-old debate: Does music actually help you study, or is it just a distraction? Through class discussions, we compared the effects of upbeat lyrical tracks versus steady instrumental beats.
To put their theories into practice, learners have begun composing their own personalised "focus tracks" using GarageBand. These original compositions are specifically designed to help them stay "in the zone" during their upcoming four weeks of assessment preparation. It’s been wonderful to see them balance artistic expression with the functional goal of improving concentration.
🦁 Afrikaans: 'n Dag in die Wildtuin
In our Afrikaans lessons, we took a virtual trip to the bushveld! Our theme, 'n Dag in die wildtuin (A day in the game reserve), allowed the learners to expand their vocabulary while connecting with nature. We read a captivating story about a day trip through the park and worked on our comprehension skills by answering related questions.
📢 English: The Power of Persuasion
Our Grade 6 learners have been having great fun exploring the world of advertising. They created their very own adverts promoting a random object from the classroom, turning everyday items into must-have products! In doing so, they practiced using persuasive language, catchy slogans and expressive voice techniques to truly sell their ideas. From dramatic expressions to powerful word choices, the classroom was filled with creativity and confidence. ⭐
Technology:
In Technology, our learners have been designing and building their own solar ovens using renewable energy principles. 🌞
Applying their knowledge of insulation, conduction, and convection, they have been carefully selecting materials and have used MaxIQ sensors to monitor temperatures. When needed, they refined and improved their designs - demonstrating real engineering and problem-solving skills.
Next week, we’ll be putting the ovens to the test. We can’t wait to see the results!
At Parklands College, our ethos focuses on educating the "whole child." We believe outdoor education is essential for developing social and emotional life skills. With that spirit of adventure in mind, we are thrilled to announce our Grade 6 Leadership Camp!
Dates: Wednesday, 18 March – Friday, 20 March 2026
Location: Genesis Camp, Porterville (visit www.campgenesis.co.za)
Cost: R1,970 per learner (Includes transport, meals, and activities)
This action-packed trip is designed to foster leadership and teamwork. To secure your child’s place, please complete the Reply Slip & Parklands College Indemnity Form and Camp Genesis Online Indemnity by TODAY, Friday, 20 February 2026. These trips are often the highlight of the year, creating memories that last far beyond the classroom!
As we fly through the first month of the academic year, our theme remains clear: Positivity. We are soaring above the small stuff and keeping our eyes on our big goals. The resilience shown in our first formal assessments has set a fantastic tone for the rest of the quarter. Keep climbing, Grade 6!
In Maths, we got to grips with BODMAS and the all-important order of operations - do you know the way to solve an equation?
Moving over to English, learners explored the world of newspaper writing and brought language to life with a hands-on preposition activity, discovering how words like 'above', 'between', and 'through' help us describe the world around us.
In FAL, it was all about food, food, and food! Learners explored nouns and their descriptions in the most flavourful way possible, tasting and describing a variety of different snacks, from sweet to sour and crunchy to soft. Who said grammar can't be tasty?
History and Geography saw learners putting their knowledge to the test with both informal and formal assessments, working incredibly hard and making their teachers very proud. Our outreach collection is also going from strength to strength, so thank you to everyone who has contributed. Every donation makes a real difference!
Finally, we’ve kicked off our Endangered Animals Project, exploring who these animals are, where they live, and how we can help them, including watching live footage from the San Diego Zoo. You can explore more at sdzwildlifeexplorers.org/animals 🐘🦏🐆
Reminders:
Bring in makerspace building items for skeleton project
Outings response form
Outreach donations (Dog and cat food)
Robotics: Who knew Geography could be this much fun? Our Grade 5s jumped into Minecraft Education to explore their current classroom topic on maps. By building and navigating in a digital world, they are learning about scale and spatial awareness in a way that feels like play but is actually deep, meaningful learning.
Grade 4 has been buzzing with excitement this week as the SP hall transformed into a mini exhibition for our Museums of Me project! Learners became curators of their own stories, carefully selecting treasures, memories, and moments that make them uniquely them. The grand opening, complete with proud parent visitors, was a joyful celebration of family, culture and the many threads that weave our community together.
As if that wasn’t enough, our young historians also stepped into the role of journalists as we explored the art of interviews. Armed with thoughtful questions and curious minds, they interviewed their parents to uncover fascinating tales about life “back in the day.” It’s been a week full of storytelling, discovery and plenty of “Wow, I didn’t know that!” moments.
Our isiXhosa learners have been playing a game this week - “hambo thenga iOmo” - which helps our grade 4s with their vocabulary in isiXhosa.
Robotics: Our Grade 4s became designers this week using Tinkercad. They’ve been learning the "magic" of 3D modeling - figuring out how to group different shapes together and, most importantly, how to create "holes" to make a functional cookie cutter. Don't be surprised if they start asking to 3D print everything at home soon!
Formal and Informal Assessments
Formal and informal assessments in the Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 – 6) take place regularly throughout the quarter after certain concepts or skills have been taught.
Informal assessments are usually integrated into daily class activities at any point during the quarter. Learners must apply their knowledge and skills learnt in various ways, from oral presentations to written paragraphs that explain their understanding of a concept to research projects that enhance their understanding of a specific topic. All informal assessments are completed at school and no studying is required.
Formal assessments take place on a specific date in the quarter after a larger section of content has been taught. Studying is required for these assessments and it is recommended that a quiet space is set up at home where your child is able to prepare for these assessments. Teachers also do revision in class with the learners before each formal assessment.
The Education Department monitors learner absenteeism, and the only valid reasons endorsed by the Education Department are as follows:
Learners may only miss an assessment (examination) supported by documentary evidence for the following reasons:
- Illness (must be supported by a valid medical doctor's certificate)
- Family bereavement (letter required)
- Representing the country or province in a sporting or cultural event (official letter required)
All absences for these reasons must be accompanied by the appropriate documentary evidence as indicated above.
Your cooperation in maintaining regular attendance helps us provide the best possible education for your child.
Please see the Grade 4 - 6 Assessment schedules for Quarter 1 below.
Please visit that Academics Tab for the Google Assessment Calendars for each grade. Details of work to study is linked in the description of each calendar entry and is loaded two weeks prior to each formal assessment.
Look for the Add to your Calendar Link in each of the Assessment Calendars to add to your own calendar so that you always get the up to date information on the nature and content of each assessment. If you use Google Calendar, you can use these links to subscribe to the relevant assessment calendar.
Grade 4
Grade 5
Grade 6
Last night, the 19th, marked the first round of Tour de Maths (TDM), and what a wonderful start it was. Our Grade 6 and 7 primary school teams achieved an impressive second place. Considering that this was their first exposure to Olympiad-style questioning, the learners showed resilience, teamwork and true mathematical thinking. Their effort and determination were outstanding - and in many ways, Mathematics itself was the real winner of the evening.
Thank you to Mrs Wells and Dr Randewijk for all the hard work in preparing our grade 6 and 7 learners for this challenge.
AUTUMN AWAKENINGS:
Our Autumn Awakenings Choir Concert in March will feature senior choirs from Blouberg Ridge, Blouberg International and Table View together with our Junior and Senior Preparatory Choirs. Tickets are now on sale using Quicket: https://www.quicket.co.za/events/314085-autumn-awakenings-choir-festival/

In Science Club this week, our young scientists explored the fascinating process of photosynthesis and unpacked everything plants need to make their own food - sunlight, water, carbon dioxide and chlorophyll. To bring learning to life, learners created beautiful chlorophyll paintings using crushed spinach leaves, seeing firsthand the green pigment that makes photosynthesis possible.
We then extended our learning into a hands-on investigation using our Max:IQ devices, where learners collected and analysed data to determine whether there is a relationship between plant leaf size and soil moisture. Through measuring, observing, recording results, and discussing patterns, learners developed their scientific inquiry skills while thinking critically about how environmental factors influence plant growth.
Moments of Study and Stillness
The learners have truly brought the library to life as they prepare for their upcoming assessments. Every corner is filled with quiet determination, focused faces, and the soft rustle of turning pages. Some students pause briefly from their intense revision sessions to recharge their minds with a few moments of leisure reading, immersing themselves in a good book before returning to their studies refreshed. It’s a wonderful and inspiring sight to see the space being used so purposefully, each desk occupied, each mind engaged, and the entire atmosphere humming with dedication, curiosity, and a shared commitment to success.
The library has become more than just a place of books; it has transformed into a vibrant hub of productivity and learning.
Library Challenge
The library challenge continues to grow more exciting as learners eagerly bring in pictures of themselves reading to their pets. What began as a fun activity has become even more engaging and lively now that teachers have joined in. The learners are especially delighted to see their teachers participating, which has added a new level of enthusiasm, motivation, and community spirit to the challenge.
Bridges, Maps, and Cookie Cutters: A Peek into Our Creative Week!
It has been another buzzing week in the Senior Prep Robotics lab! It’s such a joy to see our learners so engaged, working together to solve problems and bring their ideas to life. Our educators have been right there with them, guiding their curiosity as they dive into some truly innovative learning.
Our 1st Robotics co-curricular learners turned into mini-civil engineers this week! They spent time diving into their engineering notebooks to figure out what actually makes a bridge stand up. From truss and arch designs to suspension bridges, they didn’t just talk about it - they built them. It was wonderful to see the teamwork involved as they tested their structures to see how much they could hold.
We wish our High School FTC team all the best as they compete in the FTC Nationals this weekend at the Amazon building.
What a way to start our sports update - Happy Protea Friday! The South Africa national cricket team are through to the Super 8s of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, and we’re loving the energy and gees around campus today. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our learners to connect school sport with the bigger international stage - dream big, work hard, and represent with pride!
The momentum across Senior Prep sport continues to grow as we move deeper into the quarter. The commitment at training and the competitive spirit on match days have been fantastic to witness.
Our Cricket teams are finding rhythm as combinations settle and confidence grows with each fixture. Batting partnerships are strengthening, bowlers are hitting consistent lines and lengths, and fielding intensity continues to improve week by week.
On the tennis courts, our players are developing tactical awareness and composure in tight matches. Both singles and doubles combinations are showing encouraging progress, with learners embracing the competitive challenge.
Our Softballers continue to build momentum as their match exposure increases. The growth in teamwork, communication, and match understanding has been evident, and the excitement around the sport remains high.
In the pool, preparations are well underway for an exciting stretch of swimming events. We look forward to our Gala at Pinelands next Friday, 27 February, where our swimmers will have another opportunity to compete, improve personal bests, and represent the school with pride.
Looking ahead, one of the highlights of the quarter will be our Inter-house Gala on 25 March 2026. This event is always a special occasion on the Senior Prep calendar - filled with house spirit, healthy competition, and plenty of cheering from the sidelines.
There is still plenty to look forward to this quarter across Tennis, Softball, Swimming, and Cricket. Thank you to our parents and supporters for the continued encouragement - your presence and positivity on the sidelines make a meaningful difference.
We’re excited for what lies ahead as our learners continue to represent Parklands College with determination and pride.

Onwards to another strong week of Senior Prep sport!
Excitement is building as our U12 Netballers begin their preparations for the upcoming Knysna Netball Tour in April.
Our selected group of 10 learners has officially started tour preparation, and you’ll spot them hard at work during Friday sport hour - and beyond. Sessions focus on fitness, tactical understanding, team combinations, and strong on-court communication.
Tours are about more than just matches - they are about teamwork, responsibility, resilience, and representing the school with pride. The commitment shown already by this group has been impressive, and we’re confident they will continue to grow together as a unit over the coming weeks.
A huge congratulations once again to the 10 learners selected - and good luck as you prepare for what promises to be a fantastic experience representing Parklands College.
