Senior Preparatory Weekly Memo
12 June 2026
12 June 2026
Dear Parents
This has been a particularly challenging week in the life of our school. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our College Head Boy, Connor Niske.
Connor was a remarkable young man who touched the lives of many. His loss is being deeply felt across our entire school community. School was a place where he thrived, and through his leadership, warmth, and presence, he made a lasting impact on countless learners and staff.
Our prayers are with our Prefect Leadership body, Matric learners, Connor’s friends and family at this difficult time.
Please take note of the following:
School Closes Early 12 June
We will be holding a Tribute Assembly in Honour of Connor on Friday, 12 June at 13:30 at the Secondary Faculty. Our Monday assembly featured an inspiring presentation by one of our very own parents, Michelle Bellinger (CEO of IVC Africa), who spoke to our learners about sustainable fishing. Mrs Bellinger showcased how technology can be used for good, sharing a system she created to track whether fishermen are using sustainable methods. She left us with a vital reminder: if we don’t fish better today, we will have no fish in the future.
When shopping for seafood, she encouraged our community to actively look for these certification logos:
MSC
IPNLF
Community Catch
SASSI
Beyond the crucial environmental reminders, her core message was a beautiful lesson in responsible citizenship: always go above and beyond, and strive to leave things better than you found them.
A huge thank you to Mrs Bellinger for joining us and inspiring our learners!
In Grade 4 – 6, informal and formal assessments for Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 are added together and weighted according to the revised CAPS requirements for 2026 as stipulated by the Department of Basic Education. The combined mark is displayed as a percentage and code under the heading called Autumn Quarter on the report.
In order for learners to progress to the next grade, they need to meet the following minimum requirements at the end of the academic year for Grade 4, 5 and 6:
50% in English Home Language
40% in Afrikaans First Additional Language / isiXhosa First Additional Language
40% in Mathematics
40% in the remaining subjects

The excitement is reaching an absolute fever pitch in Grade 6! It feels like just yesterday we were kicking off the quarter, but suddenly we are down to just two short weeks left to decide who will take home the ultimate bragging rights for Quarter 2. Our learners have poured so much heart, energy, and determination into every single challenge over the past few weeks, and it has thrown the entire leaderboard into a beautiful chaos where every single house still has a fighting chance!
As we look at the latest scoreboard, the numbers speak for themselves. With just a few days remaining, a stellar performance in class or a quick surge in bonus points could completely flip this leaderboard on its head.
In our next memo, the waiting will be over as we officially announce the Quarter 2 winner for Grade 6. Keep pushing, keep supporting one another, and let's see which house can pull off the ultimate victory in these last two weeks! 🏆🎉
🎬 Grammar Comes to Life! Our Learners Become Mini Teachers 🎬
In Afrikaans, our learners became the teachers! They took their grammar knowledge and transformed it into short, creative educational videos explaining different grammar concepts we have covered in class. Each learner chose a concept and had to clearly explain the rules and provide real examples. The exciting challenge was that their examples had to be found around the school, turning everyday spaces into learning inspiration.
From signs on walls to conversations in the classroom, learners discovered that grammar is everywhere. This task brought language to life in a fun and meaningful way, while also strengthening their understanding of key grammar rules. Ms Prinsloo was incredibly impressed by the creativity, effort and confidence shown in every video!
🏆 Future Hall of Fame Legends! 🏆
This week, our Grade 6 learners stepped into the shoes of sports journalists, historians, and Hall of Fame selectors as they researched and celebrated their sporting heroes. Learners explored the remarkable achievements, leadership qualities, and lasting impact of athletes who have inspired them. Through creative posters, they investigated their hero’s journey, from overcoming challenges and breaking records to demonstrating sportsmanship and making a difference in their communities. They reflected on memorable career moments, analysed what makes these athletes stand out from their peers, and even wrote their own Hall of Fame induction speeches. This exciting project encouraged learners to think critically about what truly makes a sporting legend, both on and off the field.
Science: World Environment Day: Grade 6 Wetland Project
To celebrate World Environment Day, our Grade 6 learners investigated wetlands across the Western Cape and explored ways to protect these vital ecosystems. Taking on the roles of environmentalists, scientists, engineers, and activists, they researched environmental challenges and presented creative solutions through news broadcasts, raps, social media campaigns, and food webs. The project showcased their critical thinking, creativity, and growing commitment to environmental stewardship. 🌿🌍
🩺 Grade 6 Outing: Heart of Cape Town Museum!

This week was packed with energy and excitement across all our subjects! In Maths, we revised angles and went head-to-head on Live Mathletics, with classes battling it out to reach the top of the leaderboard.
In English, we celebrated each other's wonderful legends by using our PSW skills and the two stars and a wish framework to share warm, thoughtful feedback. Afrikaans was a blast as learners unleashed their creativity, designing their own board games, and then got to play them!
History had us buzzing with curiosity as we launched into our brand new Ancient Egypt theme, filling our wonder wall with fascinating questions we cannot wait to explore. In Geography, we dived headfirst into the difference between weather and climate, discovering all the different weather elements. With this week's weather, we could not have picked a better time!
To tie it all together, PSW gave us the chance to reflect on the power of positive feedback and what it means to truly lift each other up. What a week!
To celebrate World Environment Day on 5 June, two of our Grade 5 learners, Lok Yan Lauren and Apple decided to do their part. They walked around their local neighbourhood picking up litter. What a wonderful initiative, girls! Thank you for being such responsible citizens!
This week in Mathematics, our learners had a wonderful time exploring fractions in a hands-on way using play-dough. By creating and dividing their play-dough into equal parts, they developed a deeper understanding of what fractions represent and why equal parts are so important. We then built on this knowledge by learning how to compare fractions. Using visual models, pictures and a fraction wall, learners practised and explained which fractions were larger or smaller and began using mathematical vocabulary with greater confidence.
In Personal and Social Well-being (PSW), we focused on the important life skill of apologising. Together, we discussed what makes an apology meaningful and why simply saying "sorry" is not always enough. Learners learnt a four-step approach to giving a sincere apology: explaining what they are apologising for, showing genuine remorse, acknowledging the impact of their actions and how the other person may have felt, and finally suggesting a way to make things right. They then applied these steps by writing thoughtful apologies of their own, demonstrating empathy, responsibility and problem-solving skills.
Grade 4 Art
In Art this Quarter, Grade 4 started exploring “Affirmations”. What is an affirmation? What do we say to affirm ourselves? We used the art approach of creative lettering and learning how to stack or wrap words in a creative way inspired by John Jones. The learners did so well creating bold, vibrant and explosive artworks.

Music Recital
Please join our Senior Preparatory musicians at our annual Music Recital, taking place on Thursday, 18 June at 18:00 in the Senior Preparatory Hall. The audience can look forward to hearing our Senior Choir, Orchestra, Marimba bands and individual musicians playing various instruments.
Drama Society:
This week, the Grade Four to Six Drama Society members created 30 second ‘Movie Trailers’ inspired by ‘Secret Agent Rock’ music. The opening tableau of each group is enticing!
This week, we had our final Science Club session for the quarter. Throughout the quarter, learners participated in a variety of exciting hands-on experiments, explored new scientific concepts, and developed their curiosity through investigation and discovery. From fun practical activities to engaging challenges, Science Club has been filled with learning, teamwork, and plenty of scientific fun. We are proud of the enthusiasm and creativity shown by our young scientists and look forward to more exciting experiments next quarter! 🔬✨🧪
We are beyond excited to share some truly out-of-this-world news with you — and we mean that quite literally.
Four of our Senior Primary learners, Sinako, Liam, Elise, and Joshua, will take part in an extraordinary project that will send their work to the International Space Station (ISS) in December this year. In partnership with Max IQ, the team will be coding one of Max IQ's brand-new Springbot Gold devices to run a real scientific experiment aboard the ISS as it orbits the Earth and Sun for an entire month.
Their experiment will monitor four key environmental conditions inside the space station: temperature, acceleration, humidity, and CO₂ levels — giving them valuable data about the conditions astronauts live and work in, hundreds of kilometres above our planet.
Last week was a milestone moment — the team received their very own Springbot Golds, and the work has officially begun. Watching these four learners unbox their devices and get started was a reminder of exactly why we do what we do. They weren't just excited; they were focused — already asking the right questions and thinking like the engineers and scientists they are becoming.
This is real-world STEM in action. Real hardware. A real experiment. Real data — from space.
We could not be prouder of Sinako, Liam, Elise, and Joshua. We will be sharing updates on their journey as December approaches, so watch this space (pun absolutely intended)!
BOOK CLUB
Our Grade 4 Book Club learners have spent the week diving into the whimsical, wacky, and utterly wonderful world of Roald Dahl. From the towering heights of James and the Giant Peach to the clever underground tunnels of Fantastic Mr. Fox, the heartwarming friendship of The Big Friendly Giant and many more!
But they didn't just read—they became fully-fledged literary critics! For their latest activity, they took on the challenge of writing book reviews, reading and giving recommendations for their absolute favourite Roald Dahl stories.
GROWING RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS!
Being a library patron involves much more than just being adventurous and exploring a wide variety of books, although this is what we strive to achieve, as we know how vital the emotional and academic rewards are for competent readers. We also want the learners to acquire life-long habits of taking responsibility and ownership for their habits and behaviour. In the library, this has to do with how we take care of the books we borrow - renewing if we need more time and replacing books if there should be an accident and they get damaged. We encourage learners to take books for the holidays and make good choices to rather read a great book than play yet another mindless game. In order to facilitate holiday loans, we request that all learners will return current books, replace what went missing or renew books in person during next week. Please assist us by reminding children at home to pack their books at the end of the long weekend!
Farewell to Miss Magadana
At the end of this quarter we say farewell to Miss Magadana. Thank you Lutho for always making our library such a welcoming place. You will be missed by us all. We wish you well in your new adventure.
We are officially entering the second-to-last week of Quarter 2, and what a phenomenal quarter of sport it has been! Our Senior Prep athletes have shown incredible growth, resilience, and true sportsmanship through the wind, rain, and winter chill.
As we approach the academic assessment period, we have an important deadline to note, alongside an exciting look at what is waiting for us just over the horizon in Quarter 3.
Please take note of the final date for this term's sports schedule:
Season Conclusion: Senior Prep sports will officially come to an end next week on Friday, 19th June.
Make sure our athletes bring their absolute best energy to these final training sessions as we wrap up a highly successful winter fixture cycle!
The competitive matches may be winding down for June, but our coaching staff is already working hard behind the scenes to prepare for a massive third quarter. Here are the major sporting highlights to keep on your radar during the holidays and early next term:

Coaches' Corner: A great season isn't just built during term time; it’s maintained during the off-season. Enjoy your well-deserved break when it arrives next week, but don't let your fitness drop. Keep a ball in your hands, go for a run, and stay active. We want to arrive at our July clinics fit, hungry, and ready to make a massive statement at Derby Day on the 1st of August!
Thank you to all our parents and supporters for your incredible dedication on the sidelines this quarter. Let's finish this final stretch strong!

For safety reasons no learners are permitted to wait outside the College gates at any time.
Parents entering our campus are required to have a car identification sticker, which can be collected from reception. By displaying the sticker on your car, you will gain easy access to the College premises. Vehicles that do not have a sticker will be scanned. ‘At the Gate’ Access Solution is used by the College and involves drivers' and car license discs being scanned. This information is stored on a secure database off-site for future reference should the need arise. Pedestrians are also required to produce identification.
We request, for the safety of our learners, that parents and visitors who are on our campus during academic time also sign in at reception and receive a visitors badge. The badge must be returned to reception before leaving campus.
PARKLANDS COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH KLIKD FOR A DIGITAL SAFETY SOLUTION
Parenting in the digital age presents unique challenges. Balancing your child’s need for online interaction with the responsibility of keeping them safe can feel overwhelming. Excluding your child from the digital world might seem isolating, yet providing them with unrestricted access to smart devices without guidance can pose serious risks.
It is vital to equip our children with the skills they need to navigate the digital world confidently, responsibly, and safely. That’s why we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Klikd, South Africa’s leading digital safety and citizenship company. We will be rolling out Klikd’s Digital Citizenship Programme for Schools for Grades 4-6.
About Klikd
Klikd was founded by clinical psychologist Pam Tudin and social media lawyer Sarah Hoffman, combining their expertise to offer an innovative approach to cyber safety and digital citizenship education.
In today’s world, knowing how to handle challenges such as cyberbullying, gaming addiction, inappropriate content, online predators, managing one’s digital footprint and Artificial Intelligence - is no longer optional -it's essential. These aren’t skills that can be taught in a single school talk but require continuous conversations and guidance, reinforced at school and at home.
The Klikd Digital Citizenship Programme for Schools
Through our partnership with Klikd, we will offer a carefully curated programme that provides learners with the tools they need to thrive in the online world. Importantly, it also empowers you, as parents, with weekly practical resources and strategies to support your child on this journey.
