Senior Preparatory Weekly Memo
8 May 2026
8 May 2026
Dear Parents
It has been another full week at the Senior Preparatory. The video gives you some of our highlights but there is plenty more information in the memo.
Our Quality Assurance Team recently conducted a comprehensive learner survey across the College. The survey explored key areas including teaching and learning, the school environment, as well as sporting and cultural activities.
Overall, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive across all campuses, affirming that Parklands College provides an authentic and progressive learning environment in which learners are able to thrive.
The Senior Preparatory Survey indicates that learners are happy and making good academic progress. Learners report high levels of respect for their educators and feel cared for and valued in return. Learners show an understanding of the academic expectations placed upon them and participate regularly in the school’s various cultural and sporting activities. A significant number of learners highlighted the value of strong friendships at the College. While most learners feel safe and settled, the faculty is addressing feedback regarding social dynamics and emotional well-being through the personal social wellness and digital citizenship curricula.
Learner comments and suggestions have been carefully noted and are currently under review. Where possible, these insights will inform ongoing improvements. We value all feedback, as it plays an important role in helping us continue to provide an exceptional learning experience for all.
School Attendance
We wish to remind parents and learners that regular school attendance is crucial. Long-term absentees and extended vacations can result in learners missing these key learning opportunities. Please assist us by ensuring your child attends school regularly and punctually.
Please see our Learner Attendance Policy for further details.
Please note that a doctor's certificate is required if a learner is absent for a formal assessment. Please contact the Principal (pmayers@parklands.co.za) or Head of Academics (ldrawbridge@parklands.co.za) to ask for permission for your child to be absent for any other reason.
Informal Assessments
Our learners are in the process of completing various informal assessments, which are integrated into the daily class activities throughout the quarter. All informal assessments are completed at school and no studying is required.
Formal Assessments
A reminder to click on the specific grade assessment calendars on the academic tab to see your child's formal assessment schedule and study details. The study details are posted at least two weeks before the assessment. Please check calendars regularly to stay updated.
*Rivals – the new Fortnite on Roblox*
*If your child is on Roblox right now, there’s a good chance they’re not just adopting pets or roleplaying anymore.
They’re in RIVALS.*
*And this one feels different.*
RIVALS is a fast, head-to-head shooter where kids battle in 1v1 or 2v2 matches. I*t’s quick, intense, and built around one thing:
Winning.
*Not exploring*.
*Not creating*
👉 *Winning and being seen winning*.
*Which is exactly why it’s so gripping.*
🧠 *Why it’s so hard to switch off*
RIVALS is designed for constant engagement:
• Matches are short → instant reward
• Losses trigger “pls just one more game”
• Skill (or lack thereof) is very public → our kids feel watched and need to perform
*So stopping mid-session doesn’t feel like a break*.
*It feels like falling behind and being judged by friends who get to carry on gaming indefinitely*.
🔥 *The rise of “sweat culture”*
You may hear kids call someone a “sweat” or say a game is “sweaty.”
Here’s what that means:
👉* Sweat culture = playing like everything is on the line, all the time
It shows up as:*
• Try-hard intensity
• Obsession with being the best
• Mocking weaker players
• Constant comparison (“who’s better”)*
*In RIVALS, this is the norm, not the exception.*
And for kids, that can turn play into pressure very quickly.
⚠️ *What parents often don’t see*
Kids aren’t just playing.
They’re chasing:
👉 validation
👉 redemption
👉 status
…on repeat.
💸 *And yes just like games like Fortnite, there’s spending pressure*
RIVALS includes skins, weapons, and cosmetic upgrades.
They don’t make players better.. but they make them look better.
And in a game where status matters, that feels powerful and very addictive
📊 The bottom line
RIVALS is:
✔️ Slick
✔️ Exciting
✔️ Socially magnetic
But also:
⚠️ Intense
⚠️ Competitive
⚠️ Hard to put down
*The KLIKD VERDICT*
Our recommendation: 13+, with clear limits around time and spending.
If you’re unsure where your child sits with it, try one simple thing:Watch them play for 10 minutes. Their reaction will tell you everything.
For the full low down on Rivals and how to talk to your child about it, check out our blog here https://klikd.co.za/roblox-rivals-what-parents-should-know/

The future requires people who are innovative, humanity-centered, relationship-oriented, compassion-focused, values-driven, globally-conscious, and planet-sensitive, in order to guarantee that this generation will become REAL agents of change. The values necessary to sustain life on earth, as humans and environmentalists, are incorporated in five global competencies across our curriculum under our “Growing Minds” banner: Critical Thinkers, Effective Communicators, Purposeful Collaborators, Creative Agents and Responsible Citizens.
In assembly this week, we awarded the Effective Communicator, Purposeful Collaborator and Responsible Citizen sheilds.
The Effective Communicator trophy is awarded to Anesu for his consistent confidence in using Afrikaans vocabulary when answering questions during lessons. His enthusiasm, dedication and growing fluency truly stand out, making him a shining star in the classroom. Ms Pietersen is incredibly proud of you, Anesu. Keep up the fantastic work!
Our u12 Netball team received the Purposeful Collaborator trophy and their coaches wrote: Our U12 girls absolutely blew us away in Knysna! They started strong and finished even stronger, proving that their greatest skill is how they play together—both on and off the court. We are proud of you - Coach Nadine and Coach Simi
Yara and Isla-Rose received the Responsible Citizen trophy for volunteering their time to help clean up their teacher's classroom. Their willingness to pitch in shows what kind and caring people they are.
From Mrs Holliday
This week in PSW, our Grade 6s dived into the world of "Study Skills!" We talked about how studying isn't just about staring at a book - it’s about training your brain to be a powerhouse. Learning these tricks now helps beat the "test-stress monsters" and builds amazing habits for high school. We want our learners to feel like bosses when they sit down at their desks, knowing exactly how to tackle their work with confidence!
Here are a few "pro-tips":
The 25-Minute Sprint: Use a timer! Study hard for 25 minutes, then reward yourself with a 5-minute dance break or snack. It's called the Pomodoro Technique, and it works like magic.
Be the Teacher: Try explaining a concept to your dog, your stuffed animals, or a lucky family member. If you can teach it, you know it!
Doodle Your Notes: Don’t just write words - draw little icons or mind maps. Your brain loves pictures and will remember them much faster than a wall of text.
Social Sciences
Our learners have been working incredibly hard, preparing for their Geography and History quarterly assessments. Through interactive quizzes and comprehensive sessions, they’ve recapped everything covered this year. They are officially locked, loaded, and ready to showcase their knowledge!
We’ve taken a deep dive into the Age of Exploration, investigating the genius minds and breakthrough technology that changed the world. From the visionary sketches of Leonardo da Vinci to the monumental discoveries of Galileo Galilei, our learners are inspired.
Our learners are currently working on the "Magnificent Inventions" Project, whereby they have stepped into the role of modern-day inventors and are designing their own inventions. Stay tuned, we’ll be showcasing these creative masterpieces in our next memo. You won't want to miss the future of technology, designed right here in Grade 6!
English
In English this week, we stepped into the world of summary writing. Learners explored how to take a long piece of text and reduce it to the most important ideas using their own words. This is an important skill because it helps learners improve their understanding, identify key information, and communicate clearly and concisely. ✍️
Later in the week, we began exploring Chapter 5 of The Firework-Maker's Daughter, and the story is becoming more exciting with every chapter. Learners are eager to discover what challenges and adventures lie ahead for Lila.🌋
Science: Rate of Dissolving
In Science, the Grade 6 learners conducted an engaging practical investigation to explore how the size of salt particles affects the rate at which they dissolve. Learners compared fine salt to larger salt crystals, making predictions and observing how quickly each sample dissolved in water. Through this hands-on activity, they discovered that smaller particles dissolve faster due to their greater surface area. The experiment encouraged critical thinking, careful observation, and accurate recording of results, while reinforcing key scientific concepts related to dissolving and rates of change.
This week in Grade 5 Maths, we discovered the wonderful world of patterns. Some were a breeze and others had us scratching our heads.
In English, we cracked open a brand-new book, Boy by Roald Dahl, and we're already hooked on his extraordinary life journey.
Both Afrikaans and IsiXhosa had us putting pen to paper as we completed our Writing assessments.
In Geography, it was 3, 2, 1… blast off, as we launched into our exciting new project on Mining in Space and began exploring whether it's actually possible.
In PSW, we had a fantastic class discussion about how apps and games are deliberately designed to keep us hooked by exploiting our brain's dopamine reward system. Understanding these tricks empowers us to use technology more intentionally.
Science: Rust Experiment
In Science the Grade 5s engaged in a hands-on investigation to explore the conditions necessary for rust to form. Through a carefully planned experiment, learners observed how different environmental factors such as water and air contribute to the rusting process. They worked collaboratively to set up their investigations, make predictions, and record their observations over time. This practical activity not only deepened their understanding of chemical changes but also strengthened their scientific inquiry skills, including observing, recording, and drawing conclusions.
We are so excited to share that Grade 5 learners have a wonderful outing to look forward to in Quarter 2. The Planetarium, Digital Dome, and The Iziko Museum on 17 June 2026! Please complete the consent form as soon as possible. Further details can be found in the form.
Our Water Cycle Adventure! 💧
This week, our Grade 4 scientists dived headfirst into the incredible journey of a water droplet! We explored how water is a tireless traveller, constantly moving between the sky and the ground in a never-ending loop.
The classroom was buzzing as we broke down the key stages of evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection. To bring these scientific concepts to life, learners put their Apple Keynote skills on iPad to the test. They became digital creators, designing their own animated interpretations of the cycle. From rainy masterpieces to sunshine-filled slides, the creativity was simply flowing. Well done for working like absolute forces of nature!
This week in English, we explored the exciting world of dialogue! The learners discovered how conversations between characters come to life, not just through words, but through emotion and action too.
They worked in pairs to practise different scenarios, adding their own expressions, tone and movement to really bring their dialogues to life. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they stepped into their roles!
After practising, the learners teamed up and performed their dialogues in front of the class. We were treated to some truly entertaining and creative performances. There are definitely some future scriptwriters and performers in the making!
We also focused on how to correctly lay out a dialogue and began developing our skills in writing discussions. The progress has been fantastic and it’s exciting to see their storytelling abilities start to shine.
In isiXhosa the Grade 4s have been sorting different food into the most likely seasons that they will be eaten - eg Umphokoqo is mostly eaten in Summer.
Class 4A Robotics
In Robotics this week Mrs Steynberg (our Head of Innovation) surprised our learners by joining Miss Greig in the Tinker Room! The brief was for the grade fours to use gears and make a lego block move. They had wonderful ideas, even one where they attached the block to one gear and moved another gear! At the end of the lesson they spoke about our Growing Minds and how this applied to the activity. The learners contributed their thoughts on how we used our Growing Minds to complete the task:
Effective Communicators - We had to talk to our partners and explain our thinking.
Critical Thinkers - We had to solve the problem and think about possible solutions when our first one did not work.
Creative Agents - We were creative in our solutions and our designs. Not one design looked the same!
Purposeful Collaborators - We had to work with our partners on who was doing what and we had to work with the class as we were using resources from the same table.
Responsible Citizens - We tidied up after ourselves and did not argue about who made the mess.
Thank you to Mrs Steynberg and Miss Greig

May the Fourth has become a celebration for devoted fans of one of the great stories of our time, perpetuated in the ever-expanding Star Wars universe. New spin-off series and characters continue in popularity, based in the world of the original Star Wars created by George Lucas, with Episode 4: A New Hope released for the first time in 1977.
This week we had fun introducing “a galaxy far, far away” to a new generation of readers and movie boffins. Learners met the iconic characters of A New Hope through a variety of activities in the different grades: from designing a new look for R2-D2 to learning about Jedi training!
In Science Club, learners had great fun exploring exciting chemical reactions and physical changes. They inflated balloons using carbon dioxide produced from a vinegar and bicarbonate reaction, observing how gases can be formed and used. They also enjoyed the “dancing popcorn” experiment, where popcorn kernels moved up and down in a fizzy liquid, demonstrating the effect of gas bubbles on objects.
These hands-on activities sparked curiosity and reinforced key scientific concepts in an engaging and memorable way.
The long weekends are officially behind us, and May has kicked off with a bang! It has been an action-packed week of sport across the board, with our Senior Prep learners fully embracing the return to a full, uninterrupted school week. From the physical battles on the rugby field to the tactical play on the Astro and the clinical precision on the netball courts, the energy has been incredible.
Rugby vs. Blouberg Ridge
U11: Won 20-5. A fantastic, high-energy performance. Jean-Louise & Enzo (POTM)
U13: Lost 50-19. Despite the score, the team showed great spirit against a very strong opponent. Isaiah (POTM)
Hockey vs. Curro Brackenfell
It was a high-tempo day on the Astro. While some results didn't go our way, the technical improvement across the board was evident.
U10: Lost 3-0. A hard-fought match with great defensive effort. Sino (POTM)
U11: Lost 3-0. A dominant and clinical performance. Tiana (POTM)
U12 Girls vs CBC: Lost 3-0. The girls showed great grit under pressure. Katelyn (POTM)
U13 Boys: Lost 2-0. A tight tactical battle until the final whistle. Cooper & Heath (POTM)

U10A: Won 4-0. Liyana & Busi (POTM)
U11B: Won 7-0. Ayo & Sine (POTM)
U11A: Won 10-6. Tumisho & Tiana M (POTM)
Now that we are back into the swing of full school weeks, the focus turns to consistency. With hockey, rugby, netball, and chess all in full flight, it’s about maintaining that intensity every single day - not just on match days.
We have another massive week of fixtures coming up, so make sure you rest well and stay hydrated!
The "holiday mode" is officially over, and this is where the real progress happens.
A Message to Our Athletes: Champions aren't made when things are easy; they are made during the "grind" of mid-season. Whether you came home with a big win or a tough loss this week, the goal remains the same: Show up, work hard, and support your teammates. > To those who faced tough scores this week: Resilience is your greatest skill. Scoreboards don't define your season—your response to a challenge does. Use next week’s practice to sharpen those skills and come back hungrier!
Well done, Senior Prep - let's keep this momentum going!
Friday Hockey Sports Hour
Please note, all Hockey learners will be transported to the Secondary Faculty for Hockey training on astro at 13h15 - 14h30. All learners will be transported back to Parklands College Senior Prep - no learner will be permitted to be picked up from the Secondary campus.

For safety reasons no learners are permitted to wait outside the College gates at any time.
Parents entering our campus are required to have a car identification sticker, which can be collected from reception. By displaying the sticker on your car, you will gain easy access to the College premises. Vehicles that do not have a sticker will be scanned. ‘At the Gate’ Access Solution is used by the College and involves drivers' and car license discs being scanned. This information is stored on a secure database off-site for future reference should the need arise. Pedestrians are also required to produce identification.
We request, for the safety of our learners, that parents and visitors who are on our campus during academic time also sign in at reception and receive a visitors badge. The badge must be returned to reception before leaving campus.
PARKLANDS COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH KLIKD FOR A DIGITAL SAFETY SOLUTION
Parenting in the digital age presents unique challenges. Balancing your child’s need for online interaction with the responsibility of keeping them safe can feel overwhelming. Excluding your child from the digital world might seem isolating, yet providing them with unrestricted access to smart devices without guidance can pose serious risks.
It is vital to equip our children with the skills they need to navigate the digital world confidently, responsibly, and safely. That’s why we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Klikd, South Africa’s leading digital safety and citizenship company. We will be rolling out Klikd’s Digital Citizenship Programme for Schools for Grades 4-6.
About Klikd
Klikd was founded by clinical psychologist Pam Tudin and social media lawyer Sarah Hoffman, combining their expertise to offer an innovative approach to cyber safety and digital citizenship education.
In today’s world, knowing how to handle challenges such as cyberbullying, gaming addiction, inappropriate content, online predators, managing one’s digital footprint and Artificial Intelligence - is no longer optional -it's essential. These aren’t skills that can be taught in a single school talk but require continuous conversations and guidance, reinforced at school and at home.
The Klikd Digital Citizenship Programme for Schools
Through our partnership with Klikd, we will offer a carefully curated programme that provides learners with the tools they need to thrive in the online world. Importantly, it also empowers you, as parents, with weekly practical resources and strategies to support your child on this journey.
